No. 18 seed Andy Roddick, who lost in the first round in his Grand Slam tournament singles debut here only a year ago, finds himself in his first quarterfinal after knocking out unseeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 Tuesday night on Arthut Ashe Stadium. Roddick will play the winner of Lleyton Hewitt vs. Tommy Haas, a match suspended by rain Tuesday and which will resume Wednesday morning at 11.

Roddick's best result in three previous majors was the third round, achieved at both 2001 Roland Garros (falling to No. 6 Lleyton Hewitt 6-7, 6-4, 2-2 retiring with a left hamsring injury) and 2001 Wimbledon (falling to eventual champion Goran Ivanisevic 7-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3).

Having entered 2001 Roland Garros with great fanfare and a 10-match winning streak that brought titles at Atlanta and Houston, Roddick is now on a 10-match winning streak that includes the title at Washington.

Roddick celebrated his 19th birthday last Thursday, being one of eight men starting in the draw whose birthdays will fall/have fallen during the 2001 US Open. He is the youngest man through to the Round of 16.

Tommy Robredo and his unseeded compatriot Albert Costa, who also plays today, were the only two Spanish men remaining in the draw. Both lost.

This has been Robredo's debut year of Grand Slam tournament play. He lost his debut Grand Slam tournament match at the Australian Open to eventual runner-up Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.
