by Aaron Rennie
Sunday, September 2, 2001

No. 18 seed and rising American star Andy Roddick knocked off No. 11 seed Alex Corretja of Spain in surprisingly easy fashion in their third-round matchup Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Roddick saved two break points at 3-4 of the first set, then broke Corretja at 15 and held for the set. "A-Rod" blitzed through the second and third sets, breaking the Spaniard's serve twice in each. Roddick, who served 16 aces, including back-to-back 132-mph bombs on the last two points of the match, awaits the winner of the match between No. 5 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero and his Spanish countryman Tommy Robredo in the round of 16.

The reigning US Open junior singles champion, Roddick is attempting to become the first player to win the junior title one year and the men's singles the next.

With the win, Roddick has achieved his greatest Grand Slam result to date. He reached the third round of both the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.

Roddick is now 36-11 this year. Corretja is 32-15.

Roddick is the first American Corretja has faced all year. Corretja's record against Americans is now 25-26.

Corretja's 105 hard-court match wins are the most among all Spaniards to have ever played in the Open era.

Corretja was one of six Spaniards to reach the third round.
