TENNIS MASTERS SERIES MONTREAL                                                               Aug. 01, 2001

Rafter and Roddick Move On

Wimbledon finalist Patrick Rafter has reached the third round at the Tennis Masters Series Montreal.

Patrick Rafter dominated play in his much-anticipated match with Magnus Norman Wednesday, defeating the Swedish baseliner 6-2, 7-6(2) at the Tennis Masters Series Montreal.

Rafter, who won the tournament in 1998, now faces the winner of a match later Wednesday between American Todd Martin and Fernando Vicente.

American star Andy Roddick also defeated Spain's Carlos Moya in a dramatic match. Roddick took the first set 6-3 and seemed on the way to a straight victory when he had two match points on Moya's serve in the second set. But the Spaniard, seeded 14th, saved the match points, broke Roddick and won the second set 7-5.

Roddick was up a break in the third, but Moya fought back, broke Roddick twice and served for the match at 5-4. He got a bit tight and allowed Roddick back in the match, who equaled the score, and at 6-5, converted his third match point with a forehand winner. Roddick will now face either top seed Gustavo Kuerten or Argentina's Gaston Gaudio.

"I'm looking forward to playing the winner of that match," Roddick said. "If it's Guga, then definitely, I've never played him before. And I like playing the best players. That's what you're out here for. So I'll have a blast."

Roddick added that he feels good about his game, going into the summer hard court season. "It's the first of many tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, and I've already been in a battle or two," Roddick said. "That's definitely good. I feel like I'm match tough, so I think that will only help."

In other action, fellow-American Jan-Michael Gambill defeated qualifier Noam Behr of Israel 7-6(7), 6-3.

And earlier on Wednesday, Frenchman Fabrice Santoro extended his lead over Nicolas Kiefer to 5-0, though for the first time he lost a set to the German. Kiefer started well and soon took a 5-1 lead, before Santoro found his form. Still, Kiefer won the first set 6-4.

But from then on, Santoro dominated the match with his two-handed groundstrokes, winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the third round.

Kiefer's countryman Tommy Haas was more successful, scoring a 7-6(6), 6-4 win over Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic, who had ousted Andre Agassi on Tuesday. Haas will now play Jerome Golmard, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over 13th seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden, the 1999 Montreal champion.

Australian Open Arnaud Clement made short shrift of Max Mirnyi, defeating him 6-1, 6-2 to set up a third round match against Tennise Masters Series Hamburg champion Alberto Martin. The Spaniard defeated Dominik Hrbaty 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4.
