Rocky's Anime/Manga Review for... Ah! Megami-sama!
Reviewed: OAVs(Subtitled and Dubbed), Manga(Translated), Movie- Updated 11/09/02
Characters: The main characters are Morisato Keiichi, Belldandy, Morisato Megumi, Urd, Skuld and Peroth. The villain's name is Mara, Mahler or Marller. (I'm not too sure, depends on whom you ask.) There are various other discernable characters, like those little bug things, and plenty of other characters, but none make too much of an impact on the series. The names of the 3 main goddesses in the series, are probably derived from the names of the Norse mythological Norns, Skuld, Urd and Verdandi. All the characters are very distinct and most are really cool. Belldandy is a bit too soft to show real character sometimes, and it is especially visible in the earlier OAVs. But, she always shows a bit of toughness in their times of need, and it beautifully contrasts. The characters are very well done, and they develop quite well throughout the series. Some characters unique to the movie are Morgan and Belldandy's "teacher," Celestine.
Story: The story is pretty simple, Belldandy is a goddess who grants wishes, and Keiichi is an 'innocent victim.' His wish, well, to stay with Belldandy forever. If anything should come between the two, a great, big force-of-nature thing starts going wild. The others are just along for the ride. The overall story itself is pretty insignificant, but the way that the individual parts play out is very good. It takes steps, and hilarity ensues. The whole thing is filled with interesting misadventures that make the series great.
Audio/Visual: Well, in the audio department, Ah! Megami-sama! gets a definite thumbs up. Voices are great in the dubbed and original versions, and I just love that opening theme. The music is pretty good, and overall I'd say that in that area alone, it is a very worthy anime. But, in addition to great sound is a great visual appeal. If you have seen the manga or the anime AT ALL, you'll know what I'm talking about.
The Movie: Well, this review is being updated since I've since seen the movie. The movie's story is very interesting, unlocking more of the main goddess, Belldandy's past. It addresses a few moral and philosophical issues. And I think it's just cool. The art isn't much different with the exception of Keiichi. Watch it, enjoy it. The movie gets
from me, although it's got too much of an anime-movie feel. Too much urgency. Not quite enough relief from the deep, harrowing experience, but it's still dead-cool. Watch it and see.
Overall: Well, I love it... it's certainly a very worthy series. I do, though, prefer the anime version, just for the song and the voices. But, the manga certainly does not disappoint in the least, either. It's a definite
to anyone, if only to see Belldandy.
