Why?

Tragedy can come to our Boxers
We can't keep them safe from all harm
We love them so hard and hope for the best
But love alone isn't the charm

We train them to be well behaved
           We carefully nurture their lives
If things don't turn out as they should
We don't understand all the "whys"

We give them the best that we can
           Often sacrificing our own needs
We can't bear to turn them away
They're experts with big eyes that plead

We make sure they get all the best
           Fresh air, fun and exercise
Good food so they're healthy and strong
But still there are unanswered "whys"

We think we have all the answers
To take care of our very best friends
But sorrow and horror breaks our hearts
When sadly their lives have to end

We take them to school and the vet's
The best that money can buy
We watch out for their safety, but yet
Bad things happen and we don't know why

We read up on all the best books
So we know just exactly what to do
We talk to our friends, we listen and learn
Yet sometimes things just don't ring true

           There isn't much consolation
When the time comes to say good-bye
We don't want to see them suffer
But when they're gone, we can only ask why

We love our Boxers like children
Some say they're no better or worse
They're definitely part of our family
And we can't help but placing them first

If problems appear with our Boxers
There are so many things we will try
And when solutions don't arrive to help out
The question we still ask is why

They give us their love and devotion
The most faithful of friends they become
Because we have such great dogs
We know we are happier than some

When sobs rack our body in the night
When sad tears flow from our eyes
Their memory haunts us in dreams
They're gone, but we can't fathom why

Their memories will live in our hearts
Time won't lessen our love for these dears
We'll speak of them fondly to our caring friends
           Remembering them year after year

Our lives will be a little more lonely
Our friends will help us get by
Though sad times like these are just part of life
We still can't but help ask why
