Official Gov't Mule Website

For classic rock fans, there's joy in the power trio format.

The most important groups - Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Mountain and early ZZ Top - made exceptional instrumental talent a fetish, just guitar, bass and drums playing largely extemporized psychedelic blues-based rock at excessive volume.

Three decades later, there's Gov't Mule. Guitarist Warren Haynes, bassist Allen Woody and drummer Matt Abts foster rambling jams that combine the brute force of rock with the technical demands of jazz improvisation and a touch of the blues' emotional depth.

My first Mule experience was on 6/27/99 at the Adams County Fairgrounds, in Brighton, CO when they opened up for Lynyrd Skynyrd. I've been a die-hard fan ever since.

Sadly, Our hearts were broken in late August of 2000 when we heard the news that Allen Woody had died.

He will forever live on in our hearts and in the spirit of Gov't Mule's music.

WARREN HAYNES

"Singer/Guitarist Warren Haynes was named "Best Slide Guitarist" by Guitar Player magazine in 1995 and 1996, and his name is increasingly mentioned among a select league of legendary guitarists such as Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, and Johnny Winter. Even though James Brown has probably trademarked the title "hardest working man in show business" it would be hard for even the Godfather of Soul to deny that WARREN HAYNES should be wearing the crown these days."

"As a full-fledged member of Gov't Mule, the Allman Brothers Band, and Phil Lesh & Friends, the 41-year-old, Asheville, N.C.-born artist certainly seems to be laying the foundation for John Lee-like longevity. During the past year, Haynes has found himself literally getting off one tour bus only to climb aboard another: He's toured with each act, occasionally pulling double duty on nights when the Allmans and Phil & Friends shared a bill. In between tours, he also found time to record two discs' worth of new, star-studded Gov't Mule material." ~ Wes Orshoski, Billboard

"I obtained this pick from Warren on Oct. 15th 1999 at The Fox Theater in Boulder, CO.
This was my second time seeing Gov't Mule, and Warren handed me this pick during the show."

ALLEN WOODY

"With his band Govt Mule, "Woody" took the art of playing rock and roll bass in a power trio, and re-introduced it to a younger audience, with several new tricks of his own. He was obviously influenced by the best: part Jack Bruce, part Felix Pappalardi, but all with his own style. He was the definition of retro using his 1956 Gibson EB-1 Violin bass and SVT amp to create thick slabs of distortion combined with melodies and blazing runs. Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Allen became quite proficient at playing mandolin and bass guitar at a very young age. His first bass inspiration was Paul McCartney, which obviously contributed to his melodic style beautifully showcased in Govt Mule.
He was a high powered bassist with a finesse that demonstrated his artistic ability.

"I received this pick from someone who worked the show. The concert was at The Zoo Ampitheater in Oklahoma City, OK on July 1st, 2000 ."

DAVE SCHOOLS

"Widespread Panic Co-Founder, Dave Schools is an incredible bassist. Widespread Panic shared the bill numerous times with Gov't Mule throughout the 1990's. When Woody died in August of 2000, the music community provided abundant sympathy and assistance to his family and bandmates. First the Allman Brothers Band (which Woody was once a member of), the Black Crowes and Phil Lesh & Friends played a benefit concert with Gov't Mule. As Haynes and Abts struggled with how, and if, to continue, band friend and Widespread Panic bassman Dave Schools began opening their minds to the possibility of continuing as a quartet.."
After Woody died, Warren, and Matt asked Dave if he would consider sitting in for their Tribute tour for Woody".

GREG RZAB

"Since 1986, Greg has been the mainstay in the band of blues legend Buddy Guy. Gregs performances on Guys 1991 Damn Right, I Got the Blues and 1993s Feels Like Rain helped each album win a Grammy for Best Blues Album. Greg also performed on Otis Rushs album, Aint Enough Coming In which was nominated for a 1994 Grammy in the same category. Greg has also performed with Jeff Beck, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Johnson, Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughan, Mark Knopfler, the Black Crowes and Eric Clapton. Greg recently toured with Gov't Mule in support of their DEEP END Volume II tour, rotating bass with George Porter Jr. and Dave Schools."

I received this pick from someone who knows Greg, and Greg had sent him this pick. Greg lives in the Chicago area and this pick is his newest one. It has RZAB on one side and the Chicago Blackhawks logo on the reverse (He is a huge hockey fan!). It's from late September 2002, right before he hit the road with Mule.
