GENERAL STORES IN ROCK, WEST VIRGINIA

Store #1. Built and operated by Winton Bailey and Son Luther.
Sold to J. Mason Bailey. Rock Post Office was located in the same building. The store was also used as a passenger station for the Norfolk and Western Railway and mail was dropped off and picked up by train.
J. Mason Bailey sold to Carl Sale who also operated the Post Office.
Carle Sale sold to Luther Bailey.
Luther Bailey sold to Fannie Isic.
Fannie Isic sold to Sanford Ayers.
Sanford Ayers sold to Will Linkous.
Will Linkous sold to L. G. Kinder.
L. G. Kinder sold to Newton Reed.
Newton Reed closed the store.
After many years of running the store Newton Reed passed away. Eventually the store was sold to Nelson Pickett.
Nelosn Pickett operated the store for a short time after which he closed it.
The store has not been operated since.

Store #2. Located at the forks of the Matoaka and River Road.
Ran by John and Ida Neal and sold to Charlie Kinzer.
Charlie Knizer sold to Clyde Barber and Leonard Bailey.
Clyde sold his part to Leonard. Leonard Bailey closed the store and it has not operated since.

Store #3. Built and operated by Denver Echols. The store had living quarters on the second floor above the store. Denver Echols sold the store to Leonard Bailey.
Leonard sold to Dewey Lacy who sold it to Gene Kelley.
Gene Kelly operated the store for several years after which time he closed the it.
The store has not operated since.
Gene Kelly's son Russell presently resides in the store building.

Store #4. Will Linkous built and operated a store across the road from the Masonic Hall and Rock Cliff Bottling Plant for two or three years. He lived over the store until they built a home across the railroad tracks on land they purchased from Dr. John Bird. The living quarters over the store was rented as appartments and the store building was used a a Church for a time.
