4:00: HISPANIC TRADITION:  Learn traditions of our Hispanic community through a presentation and performance by  Tiahui Mexica.  Translated, “Forward Mexico!” a group of guitarists from Reynold’s High School.

The origination of Mexica Tiahui goes back to legends of the Spanish conquest when the Aztecs were forbidden to play their instruments.  At that time, those who continued to play had their hands cut off.  “Concheros” or musicians, began to play drums with mallets out of respect for those who had lost their hands for their devotion to Mexican music.  Concheros originates from the word “concha,” the term for the armadillo shells used for the base of the guitars.
