History Of Texas

Spanish missionaries were the very first European inhabitants in Texas, establishing San Antonio in 1718.
Hostile locals and seclusion from other Spanish colonies kept Texas sparsely populated until following the
Revolutionary War and the War of Mexican Independence when the newly developed Mexican government
began to permit settlers from the U.S. to claim land there. This led to a population surge, however
drastically reduced the portion of the population with Mexican heritage, triggering friction with the federal
government in Mexico City. After several smaller insurrections, the Texas Revolution broke out, and the
state became an independent country in 1836. Nevertheless, the freshly formed Texas Republic was unable
to safeguard itself from more attacks by Mexican troops and eventually worked out with the U.S. to join the
union in 1845

Our County
Rockwall County is the tiniest county in Texas, covering only 147 square miles. In the early 1800s, the
location was occupied by Caddo Indians. The Creek Indians began to arrive, and as they spread, the
two tribes remained in conflict. When the 1st Anglo-Americans got here in the 1840s, they found these
Indian groups at war amongst themselves.

National Road
The National Road of the Republic of Texas was surveyed and constructed in the mid-1840s through
the area that would end up being Rockwall County. Running northeast from the Red River to Peters Nest,
near the site of present-day Dallas. The cities of Rockwall and Heath were founded along this road.
The 1st post office in the area was called Black Hill. It was moved to the brand-new town of Rockwall in 1855.

The Rock Wall
In the early 1850s, farmers were digging a well and found a rock wall that crossed the county and at some
locations, appeared above ground level. Scientists have identified that this is a natural formation. However,
folk tales continue to state that ancient locals developed it. When the town of Rockwall was formed, it was
named for rock development.

The Development of Rockwall County
In 1836, the area was established as part of Nacogdoches County, and when Texas joined the Union in 1845,
it was included in Henderson County. Kaufman County was formed in 1847, and the Rockwall County region
was positioned in Kaufman County. People thought the county seat of Kaufman was too bothersome, and in
1873, Rockwall County was formed.

Rockwall County Today
The last half of the 20th century has brought about significant modifications in this when predominately-agricultural
area. It is bordered on the west by Lake Ray Hubbard, and it has become a desirable house for the continually growing
Dallas Metropolitan location.
