| THE ORIGINS OF MY PLAYING STYLE | |||||
| I started playing drums left handed with the traditional cross over technique (left hand/right foot on the hi hat right hand snare/left foot bass drum) I started on a 3 piece kit (bass, tom, snare, cymbal) and quickly added an aditional 5 piece kit. This meant that I had a double bass setup as soon as I had a hi hat. This caused me to ignore developing hi hat independance and concentrate on double bass. Which brings me to an important point-I AM A LAZY DRUMMER. I am more concerned with instant gratification on my instrument than becoming a well rounded musician. My style has been developed through years of taking shorcuts and modifying my equipment to get there quicker. I have never been too concerned with developing proper technique. As time progressed, my pursuit of the concept of the ultimate drumkit in my head has lead me through some bizarre and sometimes utterly ridiculous setups. Some ideas have been there all the time, most were attempted and quickly dismissed after hours of tinkering and experimenting with whatever bits and pieces I got my hands on. My current drumkit is the result of those years of constant re-invention and will change more in the future as my style develops. It is a highly individual setup that most drummers (even some incredible drummers) have not been able to play on. It may seem excessive or silly to some, but there is nothing on my kit that is not functional and in use sometime during performance. If I could give any advice on the development of a drumkit, I would say this; Use your imagination and never be afraid to try something new, no matter how ridiculous or nonsensical everyone else might think. This is an important key in the development of your individuality as a drummer |
