Venomous Concept--Retroactive Abortion

The art on here is very much in the style of Discharge...depressing images of war, poverty, famine...all black and white just giving a bleak look. The book has basic recording info and full lyrics. It's nicely done...except the band's name is not on the booklet, instead there is a sticker on the outside of the jewel case with the band/album name and a skull. What happens if you break the case? Frustration!

Musically, this is a tough one to review because it basically is what it is, and though I like it, I'm not really an expert on this style.

This is an album recorded in the style of late 80s hardcore/grind...hints of Discharge are here, but there's an occassional Napalm Death influence (perhaps because this band features a member?). The music is fast, pounding, with no real hint of melody...it's brutal, it absolutely pommels you and it's a lot of fun.

Unlike the music it's emulating, the production on here is much better...it's certainly not great, crisp production, but everything is audible and it works well. It's definitely raw, which I'm sure is what they were going for.

Some people eat this stuff up and just love it. I'll probably throw it on a few times but overall it's going to collect dust. I usually sit on things like this waiting for a revelation...waiting for the day, I think to myself "I need to listen to Venomous Concept" because something in the ol' noggin' just clicked. Who knows if it will happen?

This is a side project, and they accomplish what they wanted to do. It sounds great, the songs are fast, brutal, and overall it's a lot of fun but if this wasn't a side project then I'd say these guys are a bit stuck in the past and ripping off the bands of yesteryear.
