Devil's Whorehouse--Revelation Unorthodox

Packaging--
The good:
The cover is The Wolfman is red and black with the band logo on top and album name on the bottom. The booklet is just a photo of the band...the singer has a Misfits shirt on and a Danzig iron cross pendant on (which, if legitimate, set him back a few hundred dollars). The guy behind his right shoulder looks like Jerry Only.

The bad:
Under the CD is a photo of the band in a graveyard, which I'm sorry, just looks silly. I really prefer something more with a band's package...lyrics help, but more photos, more detailed info, some thank yous or even some more drawings would all have been nice.

The music:
The good:
Okay...imagine a Misfits tribute band who only knows the Earth A.D. album...then put them with a singer who only likes The Damned. Now put them in a room together and tell them to write an album. In two weeks--you have Revelation Unorthodox.

So, the question is...does it work? I think it does. Do you like "Earth AD"? You'll be into this. Do you like singers who sort of go for the Misfits/Samhain thing? You'll dig this. The singer is great...he puts in a great performance and really pulls it off. That's one of my major gripes with this style. You have guys who really can't sing try to be Glenn Danzig and it ruins the whole band. This guy can sing. Maybe Jerry can hire him for the Misfits 30th Anniversary tour?

Of course, I'm oversimplifying. The band has some interesting effects that are their own. On "The Raven" there's some strange guitar noises that create a pretty creepy feel. The midpaced songs definitely have the band's "sound" so they're definitely their own. I think they did a great job of creating their own thing while still showing a lot of respect to their influences.

The songs are, for the most part fast, thrashy punk. There are a few midpaced songs that break things up nicely. The songs are catchy, the production is great, I believe we have a winner.

The bad--
The songs Funeral Dream and Bondage Goddess, which are mid-paced, are good, but a bit long at nearly 6 minutes each. The stuck two slower songs at the end of the album which I think kill a bit of the album's momentum, but it's easy enough to skip them. Other than that, I really can't say anything against this. Great job.

Recap
Most of the album sounds like Earth AD with Dave Vanian crooning over it...the rest have that thrashy sound but they slowed the pace down. That's about all there is to say, you should know just by reading that whether you'll hate or love this.
