Brides of Destruction--Here Come the Brides
Nikki Sixx and Traci Guns fight to sound relevant...does it work?
Packaging--
The good:
The booklet is pretty straightforward. Lyrics that are easy to read on a black background with some blood dripping. Nicely done, no complaints. Some thanks yous and recording info and that's about it. There is a CD-Rom portion to the disc that has an interview with the band.
The bad:
The cover artwork is cheesy. It's a cartoony drawing of the band that might have worked on a t-shirt or sticker, or perhaps inside the booklet, but I don't think it works. Nikki said it reminds him of a Ramones cover--Road to Ruin--and it does sort of have that feel to it. If that's what they're going for, it works. The CD-Rom feature is definitely worth watching once but not something you'd throw on and watch over and over. Personally I'd prefer a live song or even a music video over the band talking but it's an "extra" and I can't really complain.
The music:
The good:
The songs, for the most part, are short, catchy, and rock and roll. I've heard complaints about the vocalist, London, but I think he does an adequate job. He can hold his own with carrying a tune and belting out a scream. Vocals for this kind of music this doesn't require too much when you really think about this. He belts out the first two tracks--Shut the Fuck Up and I Don't Care--perfectly and carries the melodic Brace Yourself very well. The production is top notch, you can hear everything and nothing overshadows the rest. This band has Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue in it, and while these songs probably wouldn't work as Crue, they're not that far off. If you hate Crue, I doubt you'll like this. If you're on the fence about them, this may work for you.
Some people are throwing around "punk" to describe these guys. It's rock and roll. The thing is, very few bands are playing this sort of music anymore...if Appetite for Destruction came out today some would be calling it punk. Now that I mention that, if you like Appetite, this may be worth checking out...this would best be described as sounding like early GNR.
The bad--
As with any album, some of the songs don't hold up to the rest of the album and just seem like filler--2X Dead, Revolution. These songs aren't "bad" but when a band puts out a nine song album I'd expect every song to be phenomenal.
Recap
he band released this full album in MP3 format a few months before it was released...I downloaded it, listened to it a few times and wound up buying it. I think that's as good of an endoresement as I can give. It was given to me for free, but I bought the full package anyway.
