Rock
Parish is comprised of the seven villages of Bliss Gate, Callow Hill,
Clows Top, Far Forest, Heightington, Ribbesford and Rock. It is situated
in the north west corner of Worcestershire and is the second largest
parish in the Country. The parish records go back to 1100.
Rock
gets its name, not as might be thought from the ground, but from corruptions
of the ancient Saxon name "Aka" meaning Oak or "at the
oak". In those times it was customary to have a communal meeting
place and a large oak tree might well have been that place. Over the
course of years "Oak" became "Roke" and eventually
Rock.
Early
history tells us that prior to the year 1210 the only mention of the
place was as Alton when a Roger de Todeni built the earliest remaining
part of Rock parish church, no later than 1162.
