There
are many famous names emanating from Rock but probably the best known
is that of the Hubble family. This name appears frequently in the parish
registers of the 17th century but it was then spelt Hubbell.
In
the 1640's Richard Hubbell emigrated to America and founded a large
family which is now scattered throughout the USA and Canada. The family
holds regular annual "get togethers", taking the form of The
Hubble Society, usually in exotic holiday venues and they are keen supporters
of Rock church, both financially and by visits there.
However,
the most famous member of the family must be Edwin Hubble who was an
astronomer at Mount Wilson observatory. He devised Hubble's constant,
which states that the more distant is a galaxy the more rapidly it is
receeding from Earth. The Hubble space telescope was named in his honour.
