Business and Commerce

Although this is a predominantly rural area with agriculture as its main commercial activity there are, inevitably, a variety of other commercial activities taking place. In addition to the obvious service" industries", such as retail shops which are already covered under the heading of Social Centres, there are many and varied other enterprises from consultancies all the way through the spectrum to manufacturing.

In some cases, disused buildings have been converted to small factory units and these have attracted their various tenants. In other cases small businesses have simply "grown" and expanded their premises to accomodate their needs.

Many of the people who live in the area are not native to the area but have moved in from the conurbations, bringing their skills with them. Often they seek a quieter life style but still need to earn a living and a small business, either full time or part time, fills the bill quite nicely. A prime example of this is a carpet cleaning company whose proprietor was made redundant from a large factory and who utilised his redundancy pay to buy the hardware required to set up in business. He now enjoys a much more peaceful life and works when he feels the need to.

Perhaps surprisingly there are a number of manufacturing enterprises with some of them quite large. Banbury Buildings is a company which operates on a national scale as is Grinnall Specialist Cars which manufactures the Scorpion sports car. Many others are on a much smaller scale, providing employment for the proprietor and one or two other people.
