Arkansas' Hot Industries: Technology & Engineering

The fastest-growing jobs in the country are technology-related. And like others in the country, Arkansas companies are hungry for high-tech workers.

Thus, computer systems analysts, engineers and database administrators are in great demand. These jobs might involve writing or testing computer programs, building computer networks or using computer applications to generate or explain information.

Among the major technology firms are Alltel Corp. in Little Rock and Acxiom Corp. in Conway. Their workers must have specific qualities.

Staffing managers at Alltel, for example, said they prefer workers with four-year degrees and plenty of experience. They want their employees to have knowledge of telecommunications, computer networks, mainframes, the Internet, databases and Java- and Oracle-related skills.

Acxiom, meanwhile, said they want computer science majors and people with knowledge of computer information systems. They said these high-tech workers also must have "soft skills," which include teamwork, planning and written communication abilities.

High-tech jobs also exist in companies you might not think about; like the corporate headquarters of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Tyson Foods Inc. in Springdale, J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. in Lowell, Beverly Enterprises Inc. in Fort Smith, Dillard's Inc. in Little Rock, Baldor Electric Co. in Fort Smith, Riceland Foods in Stuttgart and Baptist Health in Little Rock.

Virtually every major company in Arkansas needs employees with advanced computer skills. Colleges in the state are responding to and meeting the demand. For example, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has launched the College of Information Sciences and Systems Engineering and is working closely with high-tech companies in central Arkansas.

Four-year degree opportunities include:

High-tech training in computer fields also takes place at the state's two-year colleges and universities, where students can get the technical skills Arkansas businesses need.

Pulaski Technical College offers four two-year programs in computer programming, networking, microcomputer support and Internet resources, said Dan Bakke, president at Pulaski Tech. Graduates of those programs go to work for companies like Aristotle, Alltel and Southwestern Bell, he said.

And Pulaski Tech, like the other 22 two-year colleges in the state, offers Cisco certification training. Cisco Systems is the company that makes 80 percent of the switches and routers that power the Internet.

Ed Franklin, president of the Arkansas Association of Two-Tear Colleges, said graduates with Cisco certifications can expect to earn between $25,000 and $50,000 a year. Those with Cisco skills often work as network administrators.
"You'll find them at Wal-Mart, Dillard's; you'll find them at the Department of Higher Education, and you'll find one probably right there in your own office that's responsible for keeping the Internet going," Franklin said. "We know that the Internet is expanding exponentially, and as it expands, you've got to have somebody take care of it."

Pulaski Tech offers other high-tech courses beyond information technology. Students learn skills in PLC (program logical controller), which industries use to check their computer systems, and CNC (computer numerical control), which companies use to operate the machines on assembly lines.

Associate degree programs in computer fields are offered at Shorter College in Little Rock, Ouachita Technical College in Malvern and Mid-South Community College in West Memphis, which this year is offering a new course in Web site design. The class covers HTML, networking and Internet business fundamentals.

Engineering Opportunities

Engineering career opportunities are lucrative in areas of manufacturing, construction, timber and oil. These jobs can be found at companies such as Murphy Oil Corp. in El Dorado, Eastman Chemical Co. in Batesville and International Paper Co. in Pine Bluff. Four-year college programs include:
