Why is it that bands break up? Multiple different reasons. A plane crash, a solo career, or whatever. No matter if it was a good band or the shitiest noise you've ever heard, bands usually break up from internal conflict. Creative differences, bad ideas, or simply not giving interest to other's ideas at all.
I've been in a few bands (Gargamell, Toby), the most recent being SpeedTrap. In the beginning we were all having the time of our lives and loving every minute of it. Then for one reason or several, it stopped being fun and became more of a hassle and an obligation. Sort of like employment but without the benefit of pay. We were booked just about every weekend, and usually on both days of the weekend. People seemed to like the band and we loved that. People still ask me why the band broke up, some people don't even know we broke up, and other people never liked us to begin with and couldn't give a flying fuck. I don't mind explaining, but I usualy give a round about description of events. I'm here now to clear things up. Don't worry I'll make it quick.
Most of the problem was not having a very good practice space. The drummer always had a problem with the bass player (Eddie). He didn't like the way that Eddie got on his case for never practicing his insturment on his own time. Tony didn't want to play drums anyway, he wanted to play guitar and start a ska band. There was always conflict with Eddie and Tony, and I always got caught in the middle of it. Eddie and I would bitch about Tony, and had actually decided him out of the band a couple of months before the finale of SpeedTrap. The guitarist (Roberto) was usualy impartial to the direction and workings of the band. Great guy. He was really easy to work with and had great ideas. It got to the point where Rob just didn't want to be a part of the band, due to the lack of pay at venues, the drama surrounding the band, and having full time and part time employment and finding it more and more difficult to spare time for the band. Eddie could be a little hard headed at times when it came to other people's ideas, but it's not anything that I would condemn him for. Eddie and I were basically the back bone of the band. We were the ones that set things up. So in a nut shell, it wasn't supposed to be. Speed Trap was just a Speed Bump, to make you slow down enough to get over it.
Nothing New has called it quits as well. Due to the fact that Reyn (Drummer) says that everyone else in the band sucks, and that they just fuck around. He's fed up with setting up shows, and fed up with playing with the other guys in the band. They will more than likely get back together eventually, and if not then, oh well. Hopefully they will take this as a learning experience, and come back to rock once more later down the road.
