Story Elements

Character Identifies protagonist and antagonist with vivid detail; uses much evidence to support assertions. Identifies protagonist and antagonist, or other supporting character; describes physical traits and 3 character traits for each.  Uses evidence from the story for support Missing either protagonist or antagonist, or other supporting character; or missing physical traits or 2 or fewer character traits; or does not use evidence for support. Missing more than one element.
Conflict Conflict described in vivid detail using rich language, with more than 2 steps taken toward resolution.Uses evidence from the story to support all assertions. Conflict identified and described with at least 2 steps taken to resolve (solve) it.  Tells whether conflict was resolved.  Uses evidence from the story to support most assertions. Conflict description is missing one component, or is poorly explained.  Evidence is missing or inaccurate. Conflict description is missing 2 or more components; no evidence used to support assertions.
Setting Vividly describes setting using rich language.  Provides evidence from the text to support all assertions. Describes where and when the story takes place. Explains the importance of setting to the development of the story. Uses evidence form the text for support most of the time. Missing one element of setting or poorly explained; or missing evidence for support of more than one assertion. Setting description is not provided.
Theme Identifies author's purpose and more then one lesson learned using rich, vivid detail. Uses much evidence to support assertions. Correctly identifies author's purpose; describes at least one lesson which could be learned from the story; uses evidence from the text to support most assertions. Missing one element or poorly explained; or evidence is inaccurate or missing. Author's purpose and lesson learned are not provided.
Opinion Identifies strengths and weaknesses in vivid detail using rich language.  Supports all assertions with evidence from the text. Identifies at least one strength and one weakness in character, plot, setting, or climax.  Uses evidence from the story for support. Missing one element or poorly explained; or evidence is missing or inaccurate. Identifies no strengths or weaknesses.
