Reading Log  

You are expected to read 20 minutes per night.  On the line at the top of the form, please record the title of what you are reading this week. You must read every day. However, you only need to respond two nights each week. You may choose which nights you read and which nights you read and respond. On the nights in which you just read, record only the pages read that evening. On the two nights that you are recording your response record as follows:  In the small box, record the pages read and check which kind of response you are writing that day. In the larger box, respond in one of the following ways:

·        Write a connection you made while reading.  A connection is a thought you had while reading the story or article. 

1.     You can make a text-to-text connection to another book or story.  Example: “When I read about the family rescuing the dog, it reminded me of the family adopting the dog Stray Dog.”

2.     You can make a text-to-self connection.  Example: “When the character drew a map, it reminded me of the time we had a treasure hunt at my birthday party.  We drew maps for that.”

3.     You may make a text-to-world connection in which you connect the story to something in life.  Example: “In Twisters on Tuesday, I learned how scary it is to be in a tornado, and I thought of the people on the news last week who had a tornado.

·        Write a prediction that you made for event(s) that will happen later in the book. You must say why you think this will happen based on evidence from the book.  On a later evening you may choose to tell if your prediction was correct or if you decide to change that prediction.

·        A character trait that was shown by the main character. Include a way that this character trait was shown in the story.

DO NOT RETELL WHAT YOU READ.  I am asking you to THINK as you read and respond.

This is a weekly grade.  It will be graded as follows:

Each response is worth 40 points:

·        Connection, illustration, prediction, character trait ~ 15 points

·        Story evidence ~ 15 points

·        Neatness ~ 10 points

On other 2 days pages read must be recorded correctly for 10 points each.

Parent signature is required at the bottom of the form.  Missing signature will result in 10 points off.

Notes will not be accepted in place of this form.
