The Human Mind is a Terrible Place To Live

Here is what I do on the studio version of the song. This was inspired by the guitar style of Ramblin' Ron Boone. I admired the way he could use just a few notes to make a sturdy basis for a song.

standard tuning

finger picking riff

D chord                                                D9 chord
|----------2-----------2-----------2------------2-------------0-----------0--------
|-------3--------3--3------3---3--------3--3----------3---1--------1--1------1---
|-------------2---------2-----------2--------------2-------------2----------2-----
|-------0-----------0----------0------------0---------------0-----------0----------
|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

finger picking riff with alternate bass notes

D chord                 nbsp;                       D9 chord(?)
|----------2-----------2-----------2-----------2-------------0-----------0--------
|-------3-------3--3--------3--3-------3--3---------3----1--------1--1---------1---
|-------2----------2------------2----------2--------------2------------2----------
|------------0-----------0-----------0-----------0-----------0---------------0------
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the verses I just alternate willy-nilly between the riffs with the different bass notes. The speed fluctuates too, I try to make the sound kind of build up by starting out slow, going fast, and then going back to slow. And for the climaxes such as "When the winter is cold......" and "To be honest, and open....." I strum the D and D9 chords with some palm muting for flavor.

D -> 2320xx

D9 -> 0120xx

Yes I know What you're saying
It doesn't matter to me
You think that I must care what you're saying
But if push comes to shove I'd destroy this whole nation
(strumming)
When the winter is cold I hide in my caverns of ice
When the summer is hot, I cry

If I tell you what I'm craving
I know that you won't like what I'm saying
So I won't say it at all, I'll keep it within
But let me tell you this, it's not a sin
to be honest and open
Many greats died because they were too closed
In the heart of the world there is a great valley
Where all potential falls when it dies
Stare them in the face and you can see through their windows
There is so much pain that could have been avoided
Take your dad by your hand, and hug him warmly
You don't need a lover to be loved
Give your brother a call
To find out what's happening
This world of ours already has too much pain
Find a man on the streets
And ask him his story
Give him a $10 if you can spare it
This is existance of ours
It's nothing but confusion
But we must at least use what's there

I look among, all you people
I see so much pain and so few are free
Go and live your life, however you want to
Choose what you need, and what to give
But remember... the human mind is a terrible place to live.
