I Do Cherish You
by Erin

The gentle spring wind blew through James's shoulder-length blue hair as he walked down the street. He and Jessie had just had a fight and he had decided to go for a walk to clear his head. Everything that was
included in the fight echoed through his mind, including the blow to his eye, which by that time was swollen.

"Why does she have to be so stubborn?" he said to himself. "Doesn't she realize that I love her with my all heart and soul? Doesn't she know that I've loved her since I first saw her? If only there was a way to
tell her that it wasn't my fault that we had this fight earlier!"

That's when he saw it, a flower shop that was having a sale on long-stem roses. That's the ticket, he thought. I'll buy Jessie some roses! That'll convince that I'm sorry.

Smiling to himself, James walked into the store and was in awe at the many roses that were available. They came in many colors: white, pink, blue, yellow, and red. The red ones were the ones that James especially liked, since they reminded him of Jessie, beautiful and gentle on top, tough and rigid on the bottom. The florist took some interest in this eager young customer.

"Good afternoon, young man," he said. "What can I do for you?"

"My girlfriend and I had a little spat earlier," said James. "And I want to tell her how sorry I am!"

"You're in luck," said the florist. "You can buy her some lovely roses and hopefully, she can forgive you for any wrong you may have caused her! Now, what color did you want?"

  "Red, if you don't mind!"

"Ah, yes," said the florist. "Red roses, the flowers of love, beauty, and romance! I'm having a special sale on the red ones! All the rest are expensive!"

"Good," said James. "I'll take about a dozen!"

"A wise decision, my boy," said the florist. "I'm sure that your girlfriend will love the bouquet! There's no better way to say 'I love you' than with a charming bouquet of red roses!"

Once he had made his purchase, James decided to write a message on the card that came attached to the flowers. He thought long and hard about it for a moment, and then, it came to him and wrote a very captivating message that was both romantic and apologetic at the same time. The wording read:

  "My Dearest Jessie,

I know that you're probably still angry with me, but I hope that these flowers will find you in better spirits. Please forgive me, and more importantly, please say that you still love me, for I love you with
  all my heart and soul.

  Forever Yours,

  James".

That done, James took the flowers and left the store. Along the way back to the apartment, he stopped off at a drug store and bought some chocolates in a heart-shaped box. Confident that his gifts would work, James headed back toward the apartment.

Once he was back at the complex, he boarded the elevator and rode it to the twelfth floor. 12A was the first apartment across from the elevator, and he used his key to get in. James noticed that it was quiet, almost as if nobody was even there.

"Jessie? Are you here?" No answer.

That's weird, he thought. She's usually here by now.

Just as he was about to call her again, James heard faint sobbing coming from the bedroom and went to see what was going on. There was Jessie, with her face buried in the pillow.

"What's wrong, Jess? Are you all right?"

"I don't know what's wrong with me," said Jessie. "And I don't know why I just flew off the handle the way I did!"

"Hey, it's okay," said James, stroking her mane of red hair. "I know that you have your moments, and I understand that you probably were going through some problems and you didn't mean to take it out on me!"

Jessie sat up and gently felt James's swollen eye. "Oh, I'm so sorry for hitting you! Does it hurt?"

"My eye doesn't hurt," said James. "But, my heart does! I feel as if somebody has just torn it out of me and flattened it into a pancake!"

"I'm sorry, James," said Jessie. "I didn't mean to cause you this much pain! My temper just got out of control!"

James took her gently by the hand. "Come with me! I have a surprise for you!"

  "A surprise? Where is it?"

"In the kitchen," said James. "But, first, you have to close your eyes, or you'll spoil it!"

Jessie did as she was told and closed her eyes. James then led her to the kitchen, where the roses and chocolates were waiting for her on the table. When she opened her eyes again, she was in awe at the surprise.

"Oh, James," she said. "I love them! They're absolutely beautiful!"

"I felt sorry for what happened," said James. "And I wanted to buy them especially for you!"

"You've outdone yourself, my dear," said Jessie. "You really didn't have to do this for me! You could've just apologized!"

James then hugged her close to him. "I love you, Jessica! I want you to know that!"

"I know," said Jessie. "And I love you too, James!"

Then, they locked their lips in a tender kiss, thus putting their fight behind them. They knew that they would always love each other, no matter what.
