As a project in the Heaven's Treasure homeschool co-op,
we took some photographs
of the insects outside around our house.
These are pretty insects that we did not want to catch
and kill for the bug display.

Hummingbird Clearwing Moth
Hemaris thysbe
The first insect is called a hummingbird moth.
If you saw him flying you would know why!
His wings flutter as fast a hummingbird.
He also has a long proboscis that looks
like a hummingbird when feeding.
(For more pictures of these, go here.)

There are several species of sphinx moths (Sphingidae)
that look and behave much like hummingbirds.
These moths are unusual because their wings
lack scales and are mostly transparent.

Hummingbird moths are also diurnal,
also unusual, so we humans can observe them
feeding on flowering plants during daylight hours.
