Wow quite the interesting thread here. Lot's of decent arguments on both sides.
So much is open to interpretation, depending on where/how you were raised, how biased your school books were, how much fucking tv you watch...
Anyway, I have been into anarchy for several years now. And at first I was one of those fuck the government kids. then I decided to educate myself on it, and came to realise that anarchism was so much deeper than that. So much more that would make this world a better place. So many people say it won't work because they are afraid to try, because in their mind it is chaos, fighting, pillaging, whatever. Personally I think if you educate these people, many will find that it woul dbe a simpler way of life. Much cleaner and happier. By cleaner I'm talking people scum. You'll still have them, I'm sure, but most likely fewer. The whole concept really works as long as people pull their weight so to speak. For example I live with two other people, we split the bills and do our part to clean and buy food, etc. It's common sense. And if you give and give, and everybody else is doing the same, you shouldn't find yourself wanting. I'm sure this is comming out rather scattered but I'm tired and have so many thoughts and ideas and theories, that I just can't keep them straight long enough to communicate them that way. Here's something that might help, although still scattered...

and before I get flamed for the lincoln thing with the slavery, it was only an example of word usage, I know that there was much more to the civil war, but that is not the subject right now, and I do not have enough knowledge on it to debate that point. Anyway, It's late and i have to get up early, so reply to this and if I can I will respond intelligently and promptly!

Buck, The problem I have with anarchy is twofold.
1. Support and ifrastructure.
With out some type of goverment to back a currency, you do not have a means of easly transportable/storable/transferable wealth and I do not think it is possible to maintain a decent tecnological base, or build/maintain large civic projects ie highways, dams, hospitals, ect. With out these things people are going to have to support themselves in a subsistance existance, like farming with a few specilized tradesmen in the area, think about life in the middle ages and you will not be far off.
2. Corruptability and human viloence
It is easier to take then it is to build, and I belive without an enforced social contract, some people will take the easy way. I just do not belive that man is civilized by nature, again look to history for many examples.
I am in favor of a minimalist goverment, baised on a democratic, socailist paradime( like canada or the neatherlands)

Valid points based on the society we currently live in.
It would take a lot of orginization to maintain a decent technological base, and maintain civic projects, small and large. Which that does push you back in the direction of a government. But as long as you are not giving these people any kind of real power, and are not setting them on pedestals, I don't think there would be a problem. Also if children are taught from a young enough age that volunteering is the way of life, then I'm sure that things would come together alright.
It is much easier to take, and alot of people would do it I'm sure.
One of my theories is to quit looking at all the places abroad and focus at home. Once you do this, you start working to make the population happy. Which you cannot do when making decisions for the majority. break down the federal government and allow the State goverments to work. From there you open up your town and city governments, and work at making the people happy. which should be much easier on this level. From there, you begin to support the volunteer and encourage other people to do so. Once people begin to accept and work together, you start setting up projects for them. this kind of goes back to making the people happy. many of your projects you haven't been able to complete you could start now. ie soup kitchens, homeless shelters, etc. If you slowly work people into these things, while at the same time backing the government out, you can avoid the whole regression theory, while at the same time eliminating the need for a government. I am sure you will still have a few of the lazy self first fuckheads, and in dealing with them... well i haven't thought real deep on that part, but I am currently kinda partial to, Do unto the criminal as the criminal has done unto them. But that could get nasty. Actually one serious option, anybody that is a leech/problem could be sent to a prison like facility, but it would be like a reform school.
Anyway all of that would take quite some time to accomplish, most likely not in our lifetime. I am in favor of a minimalist government as well, especially compared to what we have now. But I would like to see the people take responsibilty of themselves.
They are capable, just lazy.
