Years ago, the thought of attempting to do a Halloween lounge show never would have entered my mind. Scary, yet soothing music? The very notion seems contradicting. Or so I thought. I soon began to notice that many lounge artistsdid do at least one token scary-sounding song. Les Baxter certainly had his share, the obvious being "Terror" off of "The Passions" album. Henry Mancini, too, has contributed many spooky sounding easy listening favorites, such as the theme from "Experiment in Terror." (It should be noted here that Hank had his start doing the scores for sci-fi and horror movies, too.) Even the quirky Esquivel had a spooky arrangement of an old standard on a few albums. His version of "Harlem Nocturne" off the album "Infinity in Sound" immediately comes to mind. But an entire show composed of this kind of music? I never thought such a thing would have been possible...
...Until Now.
Before, I thought that only the occasional track of "shocktail-music" would appear on various albums. However, entire albums of this type of music were produced in the late 50s and early 60s. Creed Taylor, who would later go on to become a producer for the jazz label Verve and form his own CTI records, produced an album in the late 50s for ABC-Paramount Records entitled "Shock! Music in Hi-Fi," and Jeff Alexander teamed up with Alfred Hitchcock to produce "Music to be Murdered By," to name a few.
Until now, the only Halloween show that I did was "The Rock and Roll Ghost-a-Go-Go Show." Not wanting to shorten it, however, I decided to do two Haloween shows for the first time ever the year 2000. The very first "Shocktail Hour" took place on Monday, October 23, 2000 from 4-5 PM. So sit back, relax, and be terrified!
