MUSIC ARTICLES
Here are some news articles and reviews of the music and artists that I play on my shows.  Because I do not know how to make a PDF file, I re-typed all of these by hand.  Whenever possible, I have tried to include the sidebars as well (look at the bottom of the page).  If you find any mistakes, please email me.
All of them are from the mid-'90s, which is when myself and others in my demographic seem to have rediscovered the music of the past.  They provide useful information, but at the same time they provide a time-capsule of people's attitudes towards popular music at the time.  There was a backlash against grunge and other forms of mainstream musicat this time, and people looked to the past to satisfy their music needs.  If you remember, nearly every musical style was revived: surf, lounge, swing, rockabilly, punk, ska, '60s garage rock, even polka and klezmer!  Someone could write a really good research paper about all of this I'm sure, but for now read on and enjoy.
"Riding a '60s Splashback" By Chuck Crisafulli.  (Los Angeles Times/Calendar.  August 18, 1996).  A veritable who's who of the mid-'90s surf scene.  Includes interviews with the Tiki Tones, Dick Dale, Laika & the Cosmonauts, the Boss Martians, Jon Blair, the Mermen, the Aqua Velvets, and others.
"Shooting the Curl" By Parke Puterbaugh.  (US Airways Magazine. May 1997).  A good history lesson and somewhat insightful, but there are some errors (what do you expect from an in-flight magazine?).  For example, Puterbaugh says that Laika & the Cosmonauts are from Iceland!  An informative article nonetheless.
"Finding His Niche--35 Years Later" By Lorraine Ali. (The Los Angeles Times).  An article about the resurgent interest in Esquivel in the mid-'90s.
"A Taste of Nostalgia from Cocktail Music" By Robert Hilburn. (The Los Angeles Times).  Reviews of Capitol's then only six-CD "Ultra-Lounge" series and Rhino's then three-CD "Cocktail Mix" series from the mid-'90s.
"Fringe Beat" By Joseph Woodard. (The Santa Barbara Independent).  Joe Woodard's weekly column focuses on Esquivel.  From the mid-'90s.
