The story of The Cocktail Hour begins on January 25, 1995. On this date, two grad students named Doghouse Reily and Joe Schlobotnick started The Mr. Squishy Show at KCSB 91.9 FM in Santa Barbara. The program was the premier showcase for physicist jokes and Australian Rules Football. Surprisingly, the show lasted until September 9, 1996 when Doghouse realized how much Joe sucked. Doghouse had an idea for a new show, and Mr. Squishy's Cocktail Hour was born. The show was loosely inspired by another program by a DJ named Fraulein M, called High Fidelity. (The Fraulein and Doghouse, by the way, were dating at the time and have since gotten married)
That same summer, I began programming after Mr. Squishy's Cavalcade of Fun from 3-6 AM. I got to know Doghouse pretty well and we started doing the show together two years later. Oh yeah, by that time he had shortened it to The Cocktail Hour. Anyway, a year later Doghouse got his Ph.D and left the show to me and I have been doing it ever since.
The Cocktail Hour features bossa-nova, cha-cha, exotica, lounge, rhumba, space-age bachelor pad music, and swing. It is on in California on Mondays from 4:00-5:00 PM. You can also listen to the
webcast of it at KCSB's Website.
