Miles of Pop                                                       Rick Cornell                                                                Spklanng 2
Pop bands get extra credit for being able to handle all three speeds: the crawl represented by the usually dreaded pop ballad, the jangly middle ground jog, and the full-power sprint. The Supers Toronto's latest entry in the international pop-a-thon (joining the underrated Flashing Lights), can not only handle all three speeds, they're capable of excelling at all of 'em. On the band's new Spklanng!, "Only You" is so lovely that you might even forget you're listening to a dreaded pop ballad, and "I Don't Wanna Sleep" is a blueprint for doing midtempo right. But the guys are clearly in their element when in power-pop mode. "Turn," "So Many Crooks," and "A Stitch in Time" all hover right around that magic 3-minute mark and all reflect the good things that happen when four guys supplement their diet of Beatles with plenty of Squeeze and Fountains of Wayne. And as the Vandalias will tell you, the whole comic book packaging thing is a great look.
