Roberto Rocco
Portrait Painting & Photography

I have been a photographer for many years and I have been painting portraits since 1998. I am an architect and an urban planner, but my true passion is to explore the human face. For me, painting or photographing a face is like exploring a landscape. I am not seeking for innovation. Instead, I intend to paint portraits without putting too much of my own 'passions' into it. Nor do I seek for an avant-garde appeal. For me, painting a face is not exactly an act of personal expression. I see it as craftsmanship and I intend to represent the model as close to reality as I can. Naturally, a lot of my own expression inevitably finds its way into my painting, which is not at all unwelcome, but truly secondary. My passion for people finds its way through my brushes anyway. When I paint someone, it is almost like I am practising an act of animist sorcery: I feel that I create a bond to my models that will never be dissolved.
I get my inspiration in Renaissance portraits and also in the amazing craftsmanship of the
Dutch painters of the 'Golden Age'. In Renaissance, I seek the rules for the representation of people, as I intend to produce 'formal' portraits. In the Dutch, I seek vitality, colour and detail. Please, feel free to write to me. Some of my paintings are for sale and you can always commission a portrait.
