Waiting on Tables at Feasts

As a page or maiden you will serve a minimum of one feast. You must perform this task with appropriate success in order to complete this point of service.

A page or maiden must always stand erect with good posture and poise while in the service of their lord or lady. Every movement they make must bespeak their gentility, manners, and skills. Sloppy and careless movements are not acceptable.

General Rules of Serving
    1. Serve with dignity.
A page or maiden will stand dutifully behind their lord or lady at a distance of about 5 feet good posture and poise.

    2. Serve with vigilance.
They will constantly view the progress of their lord or ladys meal so that they will anticipate their needs. Your nobles goblet should never remain empty. Their drink should be refilled from their right by reaching forward, removing the goblet, and filling it behind the nobles so as not to spill any drink on them, and then return the goblet to the table. Food should be served from your nobles left, dishes removed from their right. As a course is completed remove the empty plate, and immediately follow with the next course.

    3. Serve with honor.
See that your nobles receive each course in a timely manor. Offer bread, relish trays, seasoning, butter and such on regular basis.

    4. Serve with pride.
Before the feast begins make sure that your nobles place is set immaculately, tablecloth neat, dishes, goblet, napkin and knife laid out as below:

    • Know your nobles favorite beverage and be prepared to pour a cold drink as soon as they are seated.
    • As your nobles enter to sit for the feast allow your lord to seat his lady, and then draw back his chair sufficiently far for him to be able to step in front of it and then slowly slide it forward as he sits.
    • After all the needs of your nobles have been met and the dessert has been served, offer your nobles one last drink and then retire to prepare your own plate for dinner.
