Knightly Pastimes

A knight's life was a busy one. Their feudal duties included military service to their overlord who might be a powerful baron or the king himself. They were required to raise and train soldiers to fight in the service of their overlord. If they were landowning knights, they also had to look after a vast estate managing farms and a large number of serfs. Another important task was the maintenence of their castle. It needed to be well stocked and kept in good order for the entaining of sometimes unexpected visiting nobles. Since knighthood was a Christian institution during the Middle Ages knights often attend church quite freuently. Many castles were built with a chaple which is an enduring testament to the knight's steadfast devotion to God. Knights were also required to preform civil duties such as collecting taxes, enforcing the law and acting as judges.

Although knights had vrey busy lives they still made time for leisure. Below are some things that knight enjoyed doing:

  • Tournaments
  • Hunting
  • Hawking
  • Feasting
  • Dancing
  • Composing music and poems
  • Playing Board Games
