Minimum Armour Standards for Medium Impact Combat

The shaded areas on the male and female images need to be protected according to the armour standards below.

1. Head protection can be anything when starting out; hockey helm, lacrosse helm, anything that sufficiently protects the whole head from the top of the head to one inch below the chin. It is expected that you upgrade to a period type helm eventually, but for starting out these modern helms will suffice for the time being. (Note also that the mass of the helm is an important part of the protection.)

2. Neck/throat protection can be a standard foam neck brace or plastic and can usually be found at local drug and retail stores.

3. The kidney area, the short ribs, and the lower spine shall be covered with a minimum of heavy leather worn over inch (6 mm) of closed cell foam or equivalent padding.

4. For men, the groin must be covered by a minimum of a rigid athletic cup (e. g., a hockey, soccer, karate, or baseball cup), worn in a supporter or arming garment designed to hold the cup in place, or equivalent armour. For women, groin protection of closed-cell foam or heavy leather or the equivalent is required to cover the pubic bone area. The wearing of a male style athletic cup by female combatants is prohibited.

5. Chest protection for female combatants can be connected by or mounted upon an interconnecting rigid piece, i.e., heavy leather or metal breastplate. Separate breast cups are prohibited.

6. Hand protection can be in the form of a heavy work gloves.

7. Elbow and knee protection can be in the form of athletic foam knee and elbow pads.

8. Sturdy footwear is required to be worn at all time while engaged in any combat related activities.
