Mercy! Mercy! Me!

1978 Classy Mercy for $1978

1978 silver Mercedes-Benz 300CD for sale, but only to a classic enthusiast

This picture of "Mercy" was taken in San Diego, but
we're in the Yuma, Arizona area, now.

We have a wonderful, rust-free, silver Mercedes 300CD (Coupe-Diesel), which we have enjoyed driving around San Diego, Yuma, and the deserts. We love to travel, and "Mercy" is very comfortable on the road, gets good gas mileage, and uses the less expensive diesel instead of unleaded.

As much as we’d like to keep driving Mercy, it seems silly to drive a classic car into the ground. What Mercy needs now is an owner who cares about her, restores her to her former grandeur, babies her, and treats her like she deserves to be treated. Right now we don’t have the means to take care of a classic, properly. So we are offering to sell Mercy to somebody who can.

If you think you can knock us down on price a lot, for a car just to drive your friends back and forth to work, forget it! Unless you care about classic cars, please keep looking. Sorry, the magnetic LP signs on the sides stay with us! We will be available for questions and sharing any information we have, before and after you have her clear title.

Quote from someone else's online ad: "The Krause Publications 'Old Cars Price Guide' indicates a restored 1978 Mercedes 300 CD Coupe to be worth $17,000. However, we are selling this vehicle for only a fraction of that price to give our buyers plenty of room to bring it up to restored condition." That's what we're doing too for our -- one -- buyer. We don't believe it will take anything close to that much money to restore Mercy to grandeur -- and she's fully useable in the meantime.

Why are we willing to give up Mercy? We have recently been fortunate enough to obtain full use of a company vehicle. We also have our own truck. Three vehicles for 2 people is just not necessary for us. And we don't have covered spaces for 3 vehicles. Why give her up? Because a cool classic such as Mercy should have better care than we can give her. We know we can get more than $1978 for her. But we're looking for someone who wants to fix her up and create a real masterpiece. Mercy deserves it.

Doesn't Mercy look good with desert mountains?

Some of Mercy's features:

  • Automatic

  • Two doors

  • Body in excellent shape

  • Large trunk

  • FM/AM radio with seek

  • Brand-new $555 flywheel

  • Clear title

  • New water pump

More features:

  • Power front windows & sunroof

  • Mercy has lived in the Southwest USA and is rust-free

  • Takes diesel (which means if you're in California, you don't have to deal with smogging it)

  • Very comfortable ride; takes bumps very well

  • Seats 4 comfortably -- 6 or 7 in a pinch

  • Gets good gas mileage (using less expensive diesel fuel)

  • Gas gauge has been replaced (It was broken when we got it, but running out of gas isn't fun; no reason to now.)

Sorry, the magnetic Libertarian signs stay with us!

Miscellaneous notes:
  • Front emblem and grill are classic Mercedes-Benz
  • Being a typical diesel, Mercy has lots of power, yet is slow to accelerate. She's not going to be your race car, but she's driven us through many mountains and desert terrain
  • We'll give you our "Engine/Chassis/Units" Mercedes-Benz manual, which seems to show every single car part down to each individual washer, and how they all fit together. We've never had a regular owner's manual but have heard they're still available from the company for $25 or so
  • We're non-smokers and haven't allowed smoke in Mercy since we've owned her
  • Black interior
  • Mercy is registered in Arizona

TWO proud, but not TOO proud.
(The guy, Mercy's other owner, is gazing across the border into Mexico.)

Known problems:

  • Back windows don’t open (but they're much smaller than the front ones anyway)

  • A/c & heat don’t work; we've never had any mechanic analyze them so don't know what it needs there

  • Alternator is weak; needs replacing; lately we've been charging it after a few days of running

  • Speedometer & odometer don’t work

  • Dashboard lights don't always work

  • Some parts of the vinyl have cracked or discolored; we just cover them up; most of it is in good shape

  • Mercy has various typical older car things, which could be fixed up by a new owner

  • Tape player doesn't seem to work; the speakers aren't the best (but we certainly can listen to FM/AM radio all the time)

  • Cruise control doesn't seem to work, but, frankly, we've never spent much time with it, and never had it looked at, so don't know what it might need
