London 2012 inspires 'Water City'

The home of London 2012 will be transformed into the 'Venice of the East End' according to a strategy launched today.

The 'Water City' initiative aims to use the 2012 Games as a catalyst to bring the rivers and waterways of east London back to life.

Today's announcements follow the launch last week of the Lower Lea Valley Regeneration Strategy.

The River Lea runs from Hertfordshire to the River Thames, but for many years has been left derelict in an industrial area.

In 2012 and beyond the river will be at the centre of a new Olympic Park twice the size of Hyde Park.

Andrew Mawson, one of the leaders of the Water City initiative, said at today's launch:

"Our vision is to capture the entrepreneurial energy of east London's remarkable communities and enable them to co-create Water City and, in the process, transform the opportunities of east Londoners forever."

Olympic Delivery Partner shortlist announced

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) today announced the shortlist for the Delivery Partner contract.

The Delivery Partner will work with the ODA to deliver the infrastructure in the Olympic Park for 2012 and beyond.

Four companies will now go through to the next stage-
- Bechtel
- CLM (CH2M Hill International, Laing O'Rourke, Mace)
- G3 (AMEC, Balfour Beatty and Jacobs) and
- Legacy (Bovis Lend Lease, Capita Symonds and Kellogg Brown & Root).

David Higgins, Chief Executive of the Olympic Delivery Authority, said: "This is a first class shortlist from a very strong field.

"We will continue the rigorous scrutiny of applications as we now move to the next stage. I am confident that this process will help ensure we make the right appointment for this critical role."

The final appointment will be made this summer.
