Cuffed Capris

Vrrooooom...you've seen those commercials for Old Navy Cuffed Capris with foxy girls in cute pants riding motorbikes, right? Well I went and tried on the pants the other day, and yes they looked pretty cute if I do say so myself. But they seemed to be made from the sort of material that would stretch and sag and look crappy after half a day's wear. It got me thinking--Old Navy just took their crappy stretchy capris from last season and added a cuff...I have a crappy pair of stretchy pants from Target...why don't I make my own cuffed capris out of my own crappy pants? And thus the Maggie cuffed capris were born.

They were very easy to do. I hope I can explain: I cut off the hems from the Target pants and made my own "backwards" hems (about 5/8" wide) by folding the bottom of the pants up so that the wrong side is showing and I ended up sewing the right sides together. (Get it? It's backwards from how one would normally make a hem. The reason I made a new hem, rather than use the old hem, was to avoid having a super thick part of the cuff.) Then I folded the pants up about 3" into the cuff (as if i were gonna go clam diggin', hee), pinned it in place, and ironed those creases like a mad woman. I sewed the cuff in two places--about 5/8" from the bottom of the pant leg, and 5/8" from the top of the cuff (you will end up following your original hem stitch if you do this). I'm not sure why I felt the need to stitch it twice, except that it just felt right.

I don't know why i'm over-explaining this so--basically you just roll up yer pants and sew them in place. Easy!

Now i have my own cuffed capris, this time with pockets. I think my next step will be to take some pearl cotton (like embroidery thread, only heavier) and blanket stitch along the hem of the legs and maybe the pockets. I just learned blanket stitch and it is so fun. and fast! makes me feel fancy, even though it's so easy.

When I have a photo of the pants i will post it.
