Time whispered in my ear this morning
Told me tales that I only partly heard
It was gentle as the morning rain
No sorrow no pain.

Time whispered in my ear this morning
Told me horrid things of starving children
It was louder now more insistent like a storm was coming
No humor no fun.

Time spoke in my ear this morning
Told me the truth about itself
It was a deep voice filled with age
No feeling no meaning

Time screamed in my ear this morning
Told me the lies that made my life
It was harsh and shrill breaking my mind away
No peace no understanding

I awoke this morning
Looking at my shrieking Clock and went and turned it off
Thinking it was the thing that had spoke in my dreams
But as I hit the switch and silence seemed to fall
Time whispered in my ear this morning
Told me I was a fool time is always talking and teaching
But we are never really listening

Time laughed in my ear this morning
It was a laugh filled with the mirth of experience
And with the health of a man old but not expected to die
But to always go on
