This cartoon was published Nov. 21, 2003. To understand this cartoon you have to know that in Martin in the Late fall, early wintertime the school and town is swarmed with thousands of blackbirds that become a nuisance. These birds can blacken the sky and will occupy every perch, build a nest in everything and anything, are noisy, and the amount of feces they leave behind is hazardous. To ward off these birds UTM's safety and security lights fireworks towards the occupied trees and swarms of birds that fill the sky. I believe all they use are cheap bottle rockets (small missiles), but they certainly work well at making students jump as they do warding off black birds. The first panel is of two of these birds flying to congregate with others on UTM's campus. The second panel is the birds watching safety & security fire bottle rockets in the air to try and scare them off. As one of the birds ask if it's safe to being around these fireworks the other bird assures him of his safety, but not of the bird he points to in the 3rd. panel a turkey that is reminded of the proximity of Thanksgiving. |
