"The Hobbit" is not a new movie to me to me; quite the opposite, however, I thought I would add it to the movie reviews because it is one of my favorites. I recently purchased this movie for DVD because I had my VHS version since I was about 10 years old, and it was beginning to show its age. The new movie "TLOTR" was good, but did not come close to meeting the expectations I had from previously watching "The Hobbit". "The Hobbit" is the better movie. while watching "The Hobbit" on DVD and witnessing the beautiful backgrounds; without the interruption I had to put up with when watching it on VHS. Only on DVD can we see the true artwork that was put into the sceneary of this movie. J.R.R. Toliken's books has inspired some great work, and the depictions of middle earth in this movie are spectacular. Except for the cover of the DVD case; that was a piece of crap. I am unsure of what I enjoyed most about this movie either the dialouge or the voices of the actors that portrayed the characters? Moreover, I certainly enjoyed every individual character in "The Hobbit," but my favorite characters were: Gandalf the wizard, the vile Goblins as they were driven back by Glamdring (The Foe Hammer), and of course Smaug the terrible dragon that sleeps under lonely mountain.
However, I seem to remember a few sound effects on the VHS that were absent on the DVD. The sound that sting makes as it strikes down the spiders in Mirkwood forest and the sound of the Lakemen's arrows bouncing off Smaug's impenetrable chest. Because even the smallest details are missed the most. |
