The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

As Stephan Elliott's previous film, Priscilla is often mentioned in articles and reviews. Priscilla is also a large part of the production crew. It is interesting to compare and contrast the two films.

Priscilla is similar in that it follows a road movie genre and is concerned with the displacement of a city person into the outback. Both films contain aspects of camp aesthetic and both concern family and the outback, and both have interaction with aboriginies.

There are several differences in how the two represent certain aspects, however. Priscilla's representation of the Outback is much more glamourous than the harsh outback photographed in Welcome to Woop Woop. Elliott has said that he wanted to show the harsh reality of the outback rather than the fluffy version in Priscilla.

The representation of Aboriginies is also a point of departure. In Priscilla Aboriginal campfires are represented as a place where difference becomes the same. The Aboriginies and the Outback are where the characters find acceptance in Priscilla, in Welcome To Woop Woop the outback is harsh and it is a site of imprisonment. Aboriginal representation in Woop Woop is of a spiritual nature, that also helps the outsider. But in this case it is much more fantastical, involving the somewhat mystical idea of "BIG RED" the twenty foot tall Knagaroo. These images of Aboriginal characters could serve as a comment on the displacement story at the center of Woop Woop, or could be merely the inclusion of exportable images of Australia.
