Location and Situation

Manipur is located between 23°51 N latitude to 25°41 N latitude and 93° 2 E longitude to 94° 47 longitude in the extreme North East India, bordering Myanmar for about 352 Km. In the east and south, Nagaland, Assam and Mizoram for about 502 Km. In the North and West. Almost being a land locked territory having only two routes Imphal- Kohima-Dimapur Road (N.H No. 39) and Imphal-Cachar Road (N.H No. 53) joining the adjoining states of Nagaland and Assam with a runway of about 215 Km. and 224 km. respectively and being a rectangular cup or a threshing mat shaped with valley in the center, glittered with foaming water of Loktak lake the biggest fresh water in the North East India. The Area of Loktak Lake is about 200 sq. Km and its distance from Imphal town is about 50 Km. This is the central valley or basin is surrounded by a number of ridges and Imphal is the capital city with an area of about 29.57 sq. Km.

In western and Eastern slopes of the state, there are small Valleys. On the western slopes of the state, beyond the western hills, lies Jiri and Barak valleys and on the eastern slopes beyond the eastern hills, there lies Kabow valley near Moreh. Thus, the state's remoteness, isolation, difficult terrain etc. makes her unique of its kind.

Manipur is a "Pretty place more beautiful than many of the show places of the world. It is righly called ' a flower on lofty height' due to its picturesque beauty.
