Suture/Staple Removal Notes and Minor Office
Surgery Notes

-Sterile drape for mayo tray

-2 packs adherent dressing and 1pack non-adherent dressing.

-glass container for antiseptic.

-sterile suture removal scissors/staple remover and forceps.

-preparing medical tape for securing dressing by tearing off strips and sticking to underside of mayo tray. (can be done before or after dressing is applied).

-apply sterile gloves.

-clean wound. One swipe down the middle, one swipe down right side, then one swipe down left side. (use only one applicator or gauze per swipe).

- remove sutures.Grasp suture knot with forceps, clip suture at skin and pull out. Be sure to count sutures or staples to make sure you have removed them all.

- apply non-adherent bandage.

- apply tape (without gloves)

* If removing a bandage prior to removing sutures: pull back tape, remove bandage with clean gloves on. Place dirty dressing in BioHazard. If dressing sticks, use saline solution to moisten bandage so it will release from wound. Then the Dr. will examine wound and will give instructions.

Sutures stay in 3-5 days in the head and neck; 7-10 days in arms, legs, & hands.

Steri-strips are an adhesive skin closure. Advantages over sutures: no anesthetic, less scarring, easy to apply and remove.
