Reflection
Since we began to study the connections between literature and journalism, I have decided that I am not so sure that there is a fine line between the two. While reading the authors that practiced writing both, I have begun to see both in the writings of some of the authors. Who says that journalist write just facts? I think we all know that is not so. Who says that a journalist can’t tell a story? I like a story. Before this class I thought literature was the place for that. Sometimes when I read journalism, I like to feel like I am there, but sometimes I just want to know the facts.
While studying the writers of both literature and journalism throughout history, I have decided that there is no line between the two in some of the things that we have read and there is in others. I also have begun to fell as if some of the writers may have you one to accomplish the other. For instance, I feel that Bret Harte used his position as a journalist to publish his poems and short stories rather than the news. I know that he did write some news but he could not be objective enough to be successful. Since his first love was literature, why not try that road? So if it could happen one way could it happen the other way? Of course! Sandburg did it. He used his poems and stories to tell about actual news events. So where is the line know?
Literature
and journalism can go together. For example, while reading “In Cold
Blood”, which is a true story that offers more information about the characters
and events than you would need to know just for news, I found the news
while reading literature, which is the best of both worlds. Of course
I would not want to read a news article this long but I read stories like
this for a different reason. I like to know the facts, but if the
story peeks my interest, I want to know the details that surround the facts.
I have enjoyed this class,
learning new things, and hearing the different feelings of my classmates.
I always find class discussion extremely interesting and especially educational.
I have gain more respect for literature,
journalism, and the connections between the two. I don’t think I
will ever read the same way again. Wait maybe you guys have just
give me more work while reading.
