Iron hulled, two-masted, steam-powered screw

Built for Metropolitan SS Co., New York

the Whitney was used for freight service between New York and Boston.

During the late 1800s thru 1930s, it was not uncommon for a steamship line
to charter another lines ships to fill-in for ships in repair, disabled or lost.
While under charter to the Cromwell Line, she left New Orleans for New York and
foundered off Cape Canaveral, Florida on April 21, 1899 losing Captainn Hawthorne and sixteen men.
