The 2003 Daily Herrald
The Daily Herrald

The hills were on fire, it was too smoky to see,
so I sat in the house to recount the years fol-ly,
I had just made hot coco and turned the telly on,
When out in the ivy, as we have no lawn,
There arose such a clatter I sprang from my rest,
And cursed as my coco was now on my chest.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Cat in a Hat, with 6 things near,
Called Thing #1, Thing #2, Thing #3,
Thing #4, Thing #5, Thing #6, you see.
More rapid than toddlers on soda they came,
And she (yes she) called them by name,
'Now Sharlen! Now Shyann!
Now Pryce and Trebor! On Eliel! On Jaden!
Come now! Come now, start raid'n !'
As butterflies in Autumn wind fly,
They spread throughout the house,
Eating evertything and leaving lights on,
They troubled me with thier whining, crying,
And poking me in the eye.
Thing #1 got into the coco, made a mess and said uh-oh,
Thing #2 stuck the phone in her ear,
argued with me from far to near,
Then with a whoosh so small,
They disappeaed down the hall.
Thing #3 said 'I know how to bother them all',
Proceded to taunt, tease, and call,
Thing #4 rebounded with a kick, Flying like a kite on a stick.
Thing #5 was a tough looking sort,
And he proved it by tearing everything apart,
Thing #6 was the smallest of the lot,
He wrote on the walls and floor - little snot.

'Have no fear little fishie', Said the Cat in her Hat,
'These things are good things', And she gave them a pat.
'I do not like this I said as I lit,
No, I do not like this one little bit.'
'Would you like them here or there?'
Winked the Cat as she sat in a chair.
'I would not like them here or there,
I would not like them anywhere!'
'Would you like them in the rain?
'Not in the rain,

Then Thing #1 gave me a hug and a smile,
Entertaining for awhile.
Thing #2 brought me a present,
Hard work and a tidy house is what it meant,
Thing #3 appeared with a fishing pole,
Happily reminding me of my role,
Thing #4 caressed my cheek,
And made things not look so bleak,
Thing #5 dispelled the gloom,
and fixed everything in the room,
Thing #6 fell asleep in my arm,
And I knew he meant no harm.
I said to the Cat, 'Say..
I would like them here or there,
I would like them anywhere!
I would like them in the rain, in the house,
I would like them on a train, and in a tree,
For they fill us with glee.'
As we went off to bed I gave a whistle,
The house quieted down like a thistle,
And I thought to myself into the night,
Peace on Earth, goodwill towards men,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
