For our Cub Scout pack meeting, we took the kids to a near by park.
After opening ceremonies and awards we proceeded to the main game.
The gold rush hunt.
We divided the kids into two groups.
Group 1 (The Gold Diggers)
And Group 2 (The Gold Sifters) (You can use any names.)
Both groups were given 1 envelope.
Inside the envelope was a question to get them started. The questions in group 1 were the same as group 2, however not in the same order so the kids would go in different directions:
If the kids needed help, there was one parent near each station the parent would assist the young scouts with any questions.
At each point or station, the kids were given another envelope. If they answered the question correctly and went to the right place, the next envelope would lead the small group of scouts onto another location on the playground. If the scouts answered the question wrong, when they arrived to their new location, and opened the next envelope the paper would tell them the correct answer, and tell them where to go.
Below are some questions and what the scouts were to do:
Group 1 Question 1
If pure gold is 14 Karats go to Light number 12
If pure gold is not 14 karats cross the bridge.
Group 1 Question 2
If the melting point for gold is about 5,370.8 degrees go to the bounding frog.
If the boiling point of gold is not 5,370.8 degrees go to the bouncing duck.
Group 1 Question 3
If the chemical symbol for gold is Au go to the twisting slide.
If the chemical symbol for gold is not Au go to the panda bear.
Group 1 Question 4
If the price of gold is under $400.00 per ounce go to the slide with the kid swings.
If the price of gold is higher then $400.00 per once, go to the sea horse.
Group 1 Question 5
If Pyrite is also known as fools gold go to the sandbox.
If the statement above is not true go to the drinking fountain.
Just to remind you that group two was given the same questions only in a different order. Once the scouts reached the sandbox they were given a pan to sift for gold. We painted 25-30 rocks gold so the scouts could find them in the sand.
Prior to the activities starting, for the early scouts we made pyrite tie slides.
We used pyrite and PCV pipes and glue to make the slides.
Another activity the kids enjoyed was lassoing the horse. At the park they had bouncing horses and other animals and the kids would lasso the animals.
For a snack we had gold coins, and mud cupcakes.
