My personal experience of all my four years in Bronx Coalition Community School of Technology Literature has truly helped me by improving my writing skills. I’ve have learned how to use different techniques. I learned the number one rule of not getting stuck while writing essays, which is by brainstorming. Literature has also introduced me to pieces such as Memoirs, Oral History project and Poetry. Literature has also reflected on my personal life. The way Literature has reflected on my life has been through My Memoir Piece. I really enjoyed writing My Memoir. I got to write about my personal experience I had in life. I wrote about an accident I had when I was seven years old. Literature also reflected on the community as well which, was through my Oral History project.
My Oral History Project was based on interviewing two people and asking them what they have done or accomplished to help the people of the Bronx. I chose to interview two people, my mother and my cousin. My Poetry Project I got to learn about different Poets such as Langston Hughes who was an amazing writer. I got to learn about his accomplishments and his style of writing. I also learned about the many ways and styles of writing poetry. They are Simile, Metaphor, Rhyme, and found poem. I’ve also discovered a talent that I never thought I had, which is to write a poem. Learning and understanding the ways poetry can be written was a new experience for me. The poems I have written were about issues that related to those who do not how to deal with life or death.
Literature has also introduced me to the world of books. I got to learn and discover the different issues that goes in the world by reading an author’s point of view such authors as Walter Mosley. Walter Mosley is an author who looks at the world as a hard place. The way he demonstrates that is through his book titled Always Outnumbered and Always Outgunned. The book is base on a man who has been doing time in prison for twenty-seven years for killing two people. He gets out of Prison a changed and positive man ready to go in the right direction. He moves to Los Angeles for a fresh new start on life dealing with negativity and discrimination. Socrates is an character that tries to handle every thing that comes his way in a positive matter.
Literature has also introduced me to another great author Abraham Rodriquez. He has written a book base on the South Bronx titled Spider Town. Spider Town is a streetwise tale and a love story. By reading this book I sense that he has seen and view all of the negativity that goes on in the streets during the 1980’s.The book is based on the main character Miguel. Miguel is a drug runner for a crack kingpin named Spider. Miguel dreams about escaping the ghetto with his high school sweetheart. He dreams about leaving his harsh and violent life behind him. Spider plots after he finds out Miguel plans for leaving the drug business.
In Literature I have also focused on issues that come from the past. Such as issues concerning discrimination being selfish reasonability, Father& son relationship. The way I have explored those issues is by reading play Death Of Salesman by Arthur Miller, and two plays by August Wilson Fences and Joe Turner’s Come And Gone, and A Raisin in the sun by Lorraine Hansberry. Fences. Death of salesman. These authors wrote about issues that we all still deal with today although they are all plays from the past. The themes of all four plays let me know as well as others who has reads any of these plays that the problems we face from the past we still face today.
Literature has related to the community, the past the present and as well as the future and issues concerning every day life. That’s why it is my best subject. It has also prepared me for knowing and writing about different issues as I go on through my journey of life.
