In this essay titled Father and son relationships, which, is based on the play, Fences by August Wilson. The play is based on an African American family trying to survive in the 1950’s.I will be writing about the play Fences and what August Wilson is trying to demonstrate through his characters Troy Maxson and his son Cory about Father and son’s relationships. There are five characters in the story, which is Troy Maxson who is the main character of the story. Rose who is Troy wife, Lyons and Cory who is Troy two sons, Gabriel who is Troy’s brother and, Bono who is Troy’s best friend.
Troy is a character that is a hard workingman who controls his family life. All he wants to do is guide them in the right direction, but he does more harm than good. Troy is just trying to prepare his two sons for life telling them how the world really is not biting his tongue. All he wants for his sons is to be everything he was not, which means to succeed in life. That’s why he is always telling Lyons to get a job and be responsible. Troy also comes down on his younger son Cory. The conflict starts, on Cory playing football, because he doesn’t want Cory to get hurt like he did. Which the story reflects on Troy’s past.
Troy had been a great baseball player but before the time that blacks were allowed to play in the major leagues. Bono tells Troy that he had come too early. Troy shouts, “There ought never have been a time called too early”. That reflects Troy feels about dreams coming true and the unfairness of racism.
August Wilson as an author makes father and son relationships a major part of the play. Not only does he base it on Cory and Troy’s relationship but he also reflects on Troy and his father’s relationship and how it affects the kind of man he is today. Troy’s father also had an affect on how Troy raises, his kids. His father was very strict but very responsible in taking care his kids. Just like Troy is towards his two sons.
Fences is based on reasonability, which Troy made in his duty of doing, by taking care his two sons and making sure they had a home and got fed every night just as what his father did. I think that is the main point that August Wilson is trying to get across about father and sons relationships.
