John Beverly of Orange County, North Carolina

John BEVERLY died intestate, ca. 1765, in Orange Co., N.C., leaving at least 5 orphaned minor children. Many, including myself, have tried to prove the theory that John was the son of John BEVERLEY of Bertie Co., NC, whose will, dated Dec. 22, 1737, was proved in court of the same county the following February.

My more recent research, however, (with a little help from a few nice people on the internet) seems to point me in a different direction, as there appears to be a strong Quaker connection here. It is known, for example, that when John died, at least three of his five known children were bound out to men known to be Quakers. Also, many of the "Friends" (as Quakers are called) in this area were recent arrivals from points in Delaware, Maryland, and most noteworthily, Chester Co., PA.

It is the latter place to which the ancestral trail may actually lead, as there was a BEVERLY family associated with the New Garden Monthly Meeting of Friends in Chester Co., PA. And while I have yet to find "our" John demonstrably tied to this family, the circumstantial evidence is such that it is impossible to ignore.
