My favourite lyrics in popsongs

Here is a collection of lyrics I really like... and why

Because the world is round it turns me on...

...Because the wind is high it blows my mind...

...Because the sky is blue it makes me cry...

The Beatles: "Because" (from "Abbey road, 1969). Warning: drug abuse may cause psychedelic experiences...

When the world is running down
you make the best of what´s still around

The Police: "When the world is running down, you make the best of what´s still around" (from "Zenyatta Mondatta, 1980). Whenever I hear that song I think of that scene in "Mad Max 2" in which Mel Gibson eats dogfeed...

There are pyramids in my head
there´s one underneath my bed
and my lady´s getting cranky.
Every possible location has a simle explanation
and it isn´t hanky-panky...

...I´ve consulted all the sages
I could find in yellow pages
but there aren´t many of them.
And the mayan panoramas
on my pyramid pyjamas
haven´t helped my little problem...

The Alan Parsons Project: "Pyramania" (no, not Pyromania!) (from "Pyramid", 1978). A passing shot at incorrigible fanatics. Taken from an album which maybe is APP´s best one.

All the modern things
like cars and such
have always existed.
They´ve just been waiting in a mountain
for the right moment
listening to the irritating noises
of dinosaurs and people
dubbling outside...

...All the modern things
have always existed.
They´ve just been waiting
to come out
and multiply
and take over.
It´s their turn now...

Björk: "The modern things" (from "Post", 1995). Funny idea by Ms. Guttsmondottir from Iceland. In fact, Bjork wrote this song because some people critized that she - in their view - used too many electronic sounds on her first solo-CD "Debut".

...I met someone who looks a lot like you
she does the things you do
but she is an IBM...

...She is only programmed to be very nice
but she´s as cold as ice
whenever I get to near...

...She has an IQ of 1001
she has a jumpsuit on
and she´s also a telephone...

...Maybe one day I´ll feel her cold embrace
and kiss her interface
´til then, I´ll leave her alone...

Electric Light Orchestra: "Yours Sincerely, 2095" (from "Time", 1981). Very spacey lyrics from a very spacey album.

Hey nineteen, that´s Aretha Franklin
she don´t remember the Queen of Soul
it´s hard times befallen the sole survivors
she thinks I´m crazy but I´m just growing old

Steely Dan: "Hey nineteen" (from "Gaucho", 1980). Tell a 19 year old girl that in 10 years from now no-one will remember the Backstreet Boys, N´Sync, Britney Spears and so forth - of course she won´t believe you (and once more will think you´re crazy even though you´re just growing old !). In my view, the mere possibility that singers/groups as the aforementioned are heading for oblivion has something satisfying about it...

If there´s a god or any kind of justice under the sky
if ther´s a point, if there´s a reason to live or die
if there´s an answer to the questions we feel bound to ask
show yourself - destroy our fears - release your mask

Queen: "Innuendo" (from "Innuendo", 1991). The question for the meaning of life, asked by one Freddie Mercury knowing that he has only a few months to live.

Here comes the supernatural anaesthetist.
If he wants you to snuff it, all he has to do is puff it.

Genesis: "The supernatural Anaesthetist" (from "The lamb lies down on Broadway", 1974). An original paraphrase for death.
