When Will the Millennium Come:
The Millennial Messiah, p. 26 DGSM:104
The time for the Second Coming of Christ is as fixed and certain as was the hour of his birth. It will not vary as much as a single second from the divine decree. He will come at the appointed time. The Millennium will not be ushered in prematurely.
Earth to Rest for a Thousand Years:
Moses 7:64
64 And there shall be mine abode, and it shall be Zion, which shall come forth out of all the creations which I have made; and for the space of a thousand years the earth shall rest.
Two World Capitals During Millennium:
Isaiah 2:2
2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, [that] the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
Isaiah 2:3
3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Micah 4:1
1 ¶ But in the last days it shall come to pass, [that] the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
Micah 4:2
2 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.71
ZION AND JERUSALEM: TWO WORLD CAPITALS. When Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon, he learned that America is the land of Zion which was given to Joseph and his children and that on this land the City Zion, or New Jerusalem, is to be built. He also learned that Jerusalem in Palestine is to be rebuilt and become a holy city. These two cities, one in the land of Zion and one in Palestine, are to become capitals for the kingdom of God during the millennium.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.67 - p.68
In order to get a proper understanding of this question, it is necessary to explain the fact that Palestine is to be the gathering place of the tribe of Judah and "the children of Israel his companions," after their long dispersion as predicted by the prophets. America is the land of Zion. It was given to Joseph, son of Jacob, and his descendants to be an everlasting inheritance. The children of Ephraim (son of Joseph) and "all the house of Israel his companions," will be gathered to Zion, or America.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.68
TWO HOLY CITIES: ZION AND JERUSALEM. In this great day of gathering, the Lord has commanded that those of the house of Israel who are scattered among the Gentiles should flee unto Zion, and those who are of the house of Judah should flee unto Jerusalem, "unto the mountains of the Lord's house," which is their gathering place.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.68
In each land a holy city shall be built which shall be the capital from whence the law and the word of the Lord shall go forth to all peoples. The Savior said to the Nephites: "Behold, this people will I establish in this land, unto the fulfilling of the covenant which I made with your father Jacob; and it shall be a New Jerusalem. And the powers of heaven shall be in the midst of this people; yea, even I will be in the midst of you."
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.69 - p.70
Jerusalem of old, after the Jews have been cleansed and sanctified from all their sin, shall become a holy city where the Lord shall dwell and from whence he shall send forth his word unto all people. Likewise, on this continent, the city of Zion, New Jerusalem, shall be built and from it the law of God shall also go forth. There will be no conflict, for each city shall be headquarters for the Redeemer of the world, and from each he shall send forth his proclamations as occasion may require. Jerusalem shall be the gathering place of Judah and his fellows of the house of Israel, and Zion shall be the gathering place of Ephraim and his fellows, upon whose heads shall be conferred "the richer blessings."
Government During the Millennium:
Isaiah 9:6
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:7
7 Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
James E. Talmage, Articles of Faith, Ch.20, p.363
Christ's Reign; The Kingdom -- We have seen that, according to the words of holy prophets ancient and modern, Christ is to come in a literal sense and so manifest Himself in person in the last days. He is to dwell among His saints. "Yea, even I will be in the midst of you," He declared to the people on this continent, whom He promised to establish in the land of the New Jerusalem; and similar assurances were given through the prophets of the east. In this prospective ministration among His gathered saints, Jesus Christ is to be at once their God and their King. His government is to be that of a perfect theocracy; the laws of righteousness will be the code, and control will be administered under one authority, undisputed because indisputable.
James E. Talmage, Articles of Faith, Ch.20, p.364
Daniel interpreted the dream of Nebuchadnezzar, and spoke of the many kingdoms and divisions of kingdoms that were to be established; then he added: "And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever." Touching the extent of the great kingdom to be established the same prophet declared: "And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him."
Christ to Dwell on Earth During the Millennium:
D&C 29:11
11 For I will reveal myself from heaven with power and great glory, with all the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness with men on earth a thousand years, and the wicked shall not stand.
Moses 7:65
65 And it came to pass that Enoch saw the day of the coming of the Son of Man, in the last days, to dwell on the earth in righteousness for the space of a thousand years;
Articles of Faith 10
10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
The Millennial Messiah, p. 652 TLDP:403
The millennial day is one in which the Lord himself will dwell with men. This is a boon of inestimable worth. We can scarcely conceive of the glory and wonder of it all. The Lord Jesus Christ, the King of heaven, our Savior and Redeemer, the Lord God Omnipotent dwelling among men.
The Millennial Messiah, pp. 596-97, 600 TLDP:401
When we speak of the Lord returning to reign personally upon the earth, we are talking about a literal return. We have in mind a King ruling on a throne. We mean that laws will come forth from a Lawgiver; that judges will be restored as of old; that there will be a full end of all nations as these now exist: that earth's new King will have dominion and power over all the earth; and that Israel, the chosen people, will possess the kingdom and have everlasting dominion. Christ shall provide the government. He shall reign on the throne of David forever. Peace shall prevail, and justice and judgment shall be the order of the day. And it is Israel, the chosen ones, over whom he shall reign in a kingdom that shall never cease. There is nothing figurative about this; it is not something that can be spiritualized away. It is the coming reality; it shall surely come to pass.
Joseph Fielding Smith, Gospel Doctrine, Pg.84
We have a glorious destiny before us; we are engaged in a glorious work. It is worth all our attention, it is worth our lives and everything the Lord has put into our possession, and then ten thousand times more. Indeed, there is no comparison, it is all in all, it is incomparable. It is all that is and all that ever will be. The gospel is salvation, and without it there is nothing worth having. We came naked into the world and shall go hence the same. If we were to accumulate half the world, it would avail us nothing so far as prolonging life here, or securing eternal life hereafter. But the gospel teaches men to be humble, faithful, honest and righteous before the Lord and with each other, and in proportion as its principles are carried out so will peace and righteousness extend and be established on the earth, and sin, contention, bloodshed and corruption of all kinds cease to exist, and the earth become purified and be made a fit abode for heavenly beings; and for the Lord our God to come and dwell upon, which he will do during the Millennium.
Some Resurrected Saints Will Also Be Present During Millennium, But Not All:
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Section Five 1842-43 Pg.268
While in conversation at Judge Adams' during the evening, I said, Christ and the resurrected Saints will reign over the earth during the thousand years. They will not probably dwell upon the earth, but will visit it when they please, or when it is necessary to govern it. There will be wicked men on the earth during the thousand years. The heathen nations who will not come up to worship will be visited with the judgments of God, and must eventually be destroyed from the earth. (Dec. 30, 1842.) DHC 5:212.
Great Knowledge Available During Millennium:
Isaiah 11:9
9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
2 Nephi 21:9
9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
2 Nephi 30:15
15 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
2 Nephi 30:16
16 Wherefore, the things of all nations shall be made known; yea, all things shall be made known unto the children of men.
2 Nephi 30:17
17 There is nothing which is secret save it shall be revealed; there is no work of darkness save it shall be made manifest in the light; and there is nothing which is sealed upon the earth save it shall be loosed.
2 Nephi 30:18
18 Wherefore, all things which have been revealed unto the children of men shall at that day be revealed;..
D&C 84:98
98 Until all shall know me, who remain, even from the least unto the greatest, and shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord, and shall see eye to eye, and shall lift up their voice, and with the voice together sing this new song, saying:
D&C 101:27
27 And in that day whatsoever any man shall ask, it shall be given unto him.
D&C 101:32
32 Yea, verily I say unto you, in that day when the Lord shall come, he shall reveal all things--
D&C 101:33
33 Things which have passed, and hidden things which no man knew, things of the earth, by which it was made, and the purpose and the end thereof--
D&C 101:34
34 Things most precious, things that are above, and things that are beneath, things that are in the earth, and upon the earth, and in heaven.
Matthias F. Cowley, Cowley's Talks on Doctrine p.194
Paul says, "When that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away." (I Cor. xiii.) Prophecy and tongues and the gifts of the Gospel imperfectly enjoyed by man in his weakness were never designed to be done away until we come to enjoy a more perfect fullness, "when we see as we are seen and know as we are known." Zephania says: "For then will I turn to the people a pure language that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one consent." (Zeph. iii: 9.) The pure language was confounded at the tower of Babel, because men sought to thwart the [p.195]purposes of Jehovah. When the time comes that the wicked who will not obey are swept from the earth, the Lord will restore to His children the language which they learned from their mother tongue and which was spoken from Adam to the time of the tower of Babel. He will also unite the great bodies of water into a mighty ocean and roll it back to its place in the North, while the lands of the earth will be reunited and become one vast continent.
Temple Work During the Millennium:
George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth, Vol. 1, p.90
We shall build temples, and we shall go forth in peace and in righteousness, doing the works of redemption that have to be done for those that have died in ignorance of the Gospel and without receiving these saving ordinances. We shall find plenty of employment during the thousand years in doing these works, and the earth will be cleansed from sin There will be no war, for swords will be beaten into plowshares, and spears into pruning hooks, and there shall be peace from one end of the earth to the other. (Oct. 9, 1892, DW 45:620)
Isaiah 11:6
6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
Isaiah 11:7
7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
Isaiah 11:8
8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.
Isaiah 65:25
25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust [shall be] the serpent's meat.
Ezekiel 34:25
25 And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.
Ezekiel 34:28
28 And they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make [them] afraid.
Ezekiel 34:29
29 And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more.
2 Nephi 30:12
12 And then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb; and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf, and the young lion, and the fatling, together; and a little child shall lead them.
2 Nephi 30:13
13 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
2 Nephi 30:14
14 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice's den.
Landscape of Earth Will Be Changed:
Isaiah 35:1
1 ¶ The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.
Isaiah 35:6
6 ..for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
Isaiah 35:7
7 And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, [shall be] grass with reeds and rushes.
Ezekiel 36:34
34 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by.
Ezekiel 36:35
35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities [are become] fenced, [and] are inhabited.
Ezekiel 36:36
36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined [places, and] plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken [it], and I will do [it].
Revelation 21:1
1 ¶ And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.56 - p.57
EARTH TO BE RENEWED WHEN MILLENNIUM COMES. Latter-day Saints believe that the day is near, even at the doors, when Christ shall make his appearance as the rightful ruler of the earth. When that time comes, the whole earth and all things which remain upon its face shall be changed, and "the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory." That means that the earth shall be brought back to a similar condition which prevailed when peace and righteousness ruled and before death entered with its awful stain of evil and destruction.
Isaiah 35:5
5 ¶ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
Isaiah 35:6
6 Then shall the lame [man] leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing..
Memory of Former Earth life Forgotten:
Isaiah 65:17
17 ¶ For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
No Sorrow, Pain, or Death During Millennium:
Isaiah 65:18
18 But be ye glad and rejoice for ever [in that] which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.
Isaiah 65:19
19 And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.
Revelation 21:4
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Temple Work During the Millennium:
Discourses of Brigham Young, p.116
In the Millennium, when the Kingdom of God is established on the earth in power, glory and perfection, and the reign of wickedness that has so long prevailed is subdued, the Saints of God will have the privilege of building their temples, and of entering into them, becoming, as it were, pillars in the temples of God, and they will officiate for their dead. Then we will see our friends come up, and perhaps some that we have been acquainted with here. If we ask who will stand at the head of the resurrection in this last dispensation, the answer is—Joseph Smith, Junior, the Prophet of God. He is the man who will be resurrected and receive the keys of the resurrection, and he will seal this authority upon others, and they will hunt up their friends and resurrect them when they shall have been officiated for, and bring them up. And we will have revelations to know our forefathers clear back to Father Adam and Mother Eve, and we will enter into the temples of God and officiate for them. Then man will be sealed to man until the chain is made perfect back to Adam, so that there will be a perfect chain of Priesthood from Adam to the winding-up scene.
John Taylor, The Gospel Kingdom, p.174
THE WORK DURING THE MILLENNIUM.—There is nothing new in all this. The spirit of rebellion has gone on ever since the devil and his angels were cast out of heaven. He and they have been making war against the saints, and will continue to do so; but Satan will finally be overcome. Before that, how ever, Satan will be bound for a thousand years, and during that time we will have a chance to build temples and to be baptized for the dead, and to do a work pertaining to the world that has been, as well as to the world that now is, and to operate under the direction of the Almighty in bringing to pass those designs which he contemplated from the foundation of the world.—JD, 24:233-235.
John Taylor, The Gospel Kingdom, p.287
THE MILLENNIUM.—We read sometimes about the millennium, But what do we know about it? It is a time when this work will be going on, and temples, thousands of them, will be reared for the accomplishment of the objects designed, in which communications from the heavens will be received in regard to our labors, how we may perform them, and for whom. This is the work devolving upon us.—JD, 25:185, May 18, 1884.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.58
TEMPLE WORK BY MORTALS DURING MILLENNIUM. However, there shall be mortality upon the face of the earth during the thousand years, because of the great work that is to be accomplished of salvation for the dead. During that thousand years of peace the great work of the Lord shall be in the temples, and into those temples the people shall go to labor for those who have passed beyond and who are waiting to have these ordinances which pertain to their salvation performed for them by those who still dwell in mortality upon the earth. And so there shall be mortal men, but they shall live from the time of birth until they are 100 years old and shall then be changed suddenly.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.59
All those who have died in Christ shall come forth from the dead at his coming and shall dwell upon the earth as Christ shall be upon the earth during this millennium. They shall not remain here all the time during the thousand years, but they will mingle with those who are still here in mortal life. These resurrected saints and the Savior himself, shall come to give instruction and guidance; to reveal unto us the things we ought to know; to give us information concerning the work in the temples of the Lord so we may do the work which is essential to the salvation of worthy men.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.65
The Lord has said through his servants that during the millennium those who have passed beyond and have attained the resurrection will reveal in person to those who are still in mortality all the information which is required to complete the work of these who have passed from this life. Then the dead will have the privilege of making known the things they desire and are entitled to receive. In this way no soul will be neglected and the work of the Lord will be perfected.
Mortal Life Will Be Different:
Isaiah 65:20
20 There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner [being] an hundred years old shall be accursed.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.65
DECEASED CHILDREN TO CHOOSE MATES IN MILLENNIUM. We have people coming to us all the time just as fearful as they can be that a child of theirs who has died will lose the blessings of the kingdom of God unless that child is sealed to someone who is dead, They do not know the wishes of their child who died too young to think of marriage, but they want to go straight to the temple and have a sealing performed. Such a thing as this is unnecessary and in my judgment wrong.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.65 - p.66
It is the duty of parents who have children who have died and who were old enough to be endowed, to go to the temple and perform this endowment for them. When you have done this, you may let the matter of further work rest, except the sealing of these children to their parents, until the proper time comes.
Live in Homes We Build and Gardens We Plant:
Isaiah 65:21
21 And they shall build houses, and inhabit [them]; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.
Isaiah 65:22
22 They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree [are] the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
Isaiah 65:23
23 They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they [are] the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.
D&C 101:101
101 They shall build, and another shall not inherit it; they shall plant vineyards, and they shall eat the fruit thereof. Even so. Amen.
Ezekiel 34:27
27 And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I [am] the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them.
Discourses of Brigham Young, p.115
The Millennium consists in this—every heart in the Church and Kingdom of God being united in one; the Kingdom increasing to the overcoming of everything opposed to the economy of heaven, and Satan being bound, and having a seal set upon him. All things else will be as they are now, we shall eat, drink, and wear clothing. 1:203.
Discourses of Brigham Young, p.115 - p.116
Let the people be holy, and the earth under their feet will be holy. Let the people be holy, and filled with the Spirit of God, and every animal and creeping thing will be filled with peace; the soil of the earth will bring forth in its strength, and the fruits thereof will be meat for man.
Peace Will Prevail-No More War:
Hosea 2:18
18 And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and [with] the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.
Micah 4:3
3 And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Different Faiths Still During the Millennium:
Micah 4:5
5 For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Notes Pg.268
The Prophet's statement that there will be wicked men on the earth during the Millennium has caused considerable confusion in the minds of many who have read in the Scripture in many places that when Christ comes the earth shall be cleansed from its wickedness, and that the wicked shall not stand, but shall be consumed. See D&C 5:18-19, 29:8-10, 101:23-25; Isaiah 24:1-3; Malachi 4:1. The evil-minded inhabitants, those "who love and make a lie" and are guilty of all manner of corruption, will be consumed and pass away when Christ comes. In using the term "wicked men" in this instruction at the home of Judge Adams, the Prophet did so in the same sense in which the Lord uses it in the eighty-fourth section of the Doctrine and Covenants, 49-53. The Lord in this scripture speaks of those who have not received the Gospel as being under the bondage of sin, and hence "wicked." However, many of these people are honorable, clean living men, but they have not embraced the Gospel. The inhabitants of the terrestrial order will remain on the earth during the Millennium, and this class are without the Gospel ordinances. See D&C 76:73-76.
Discourses of Brigham Young, p.115
When all nations are so subdued to Jesus that every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess, there will still be millions on the earth who will not believe in him; but they will be obliged to acknowledge his kingly government. 7:142.
Discourses of Brigham Young, p.116
When Jesus comes to rule and reign, King of nations, as he now does, King of Saints, the veil of the covering will be taken from all nations, that all flesh may see his glory together, but that will not make them all Saints. Seeing the Lord does not make a man a Saint; seeing an angel does not make a man a Saint by any means. A man may see the finger of the Lord, and not thereby become a Saint; the veil of the covering may be taken from before the nations, and all flesh see his glory together, and at the same time declare they will not serve him. 2:316.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.63
VARIOUS CHURCHES FOUND DURING MILLENNIUM. On this subject President Brigham Young has said: "In the millennium men will have the privilege of their own belief, but they will not have the privilege of treating the name and character of Deity as they have done heretofore. No, but every knee shall bow and every tongue confess to the glory of God the Father that Jesus is the Christ."
Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, Vol.1, p.109
So we learn that all corruptible things, whether men or beasts or element, shall be consumed; but all that does not come under this awful edict shall remain. Therefore, the honest and upright of all nations, kindreds, and beliefs who have kept the terrestrial as well as the celestial law, will remain. Under these conditions people will enter the great reign of Jesus Christ, carrying with them their beliefs and religious doctrines. Their agency will not be taken from them. On this subject President Brigham Young has said:
In the Millennium men will have the privilege of their own belief, but they will not have the privilege of treating the name and character of Deity as they have done before. No, but every knee shall bow and every tongue confess to the glory of God the Father that Jesus is the Christ.4
Burton, ed., We Believe, Millennium
When all nations are so subdued to Jesus that every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess, there will still be millions on the earth who will not believe in him; but they will be obliged to acknowledge his kingly government. (In Tabernacle, May 22, 1859, JD7:142) TLDP:400
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.64
SPREAD OF GOSPEL DURING MILLENNIUM. The gospel will be taught far more intensely and with greater power during the millennium, until all the inhabitants of the earth shall embrace it. Satan shall be bound so that he cannot tempt any man. Should any man refuse to repent and accept the gospel under those conditions then he would be accursed. Through the revelations given to the prophets, we learn that during the reign of Jesus Christ for a thousand years eventually all people will embrace the truth.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.66
FINAL CELESTIAL DESTINY OF EARTH. The righteous dead are to come forth from their graves, and there will be a mingling of mortals and immortals upon the earth. Christ and the resurrected saints who hold the priesthood shall teach the people, so there can be no misunderstandings and mistakes. For 1,000 years shall this happy time of peace prevail and in due time all the inhabitants of the earth shall be brought into the fold of the Church.
Millennium is reserved for Celestial and Terrestrial Only:
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.59 - p.60
WICKED REMAIN IN SPIRIT PRISON DURING MILLENNIUM. However, if we have not kept the commandments of the Lord, if we have been unjust, and lovers of sin and our hearts have been set upon evil, then we shall die and shall not live again until the thousand years are ended. It is decreed that the unrighteous shall have to spend their time during this thousand years in the prison house prepared for them where they can repent and cleanse themselves through the things which they shall suffer.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.60
John, in his great vision, saw the rest of the dead and they lived not again until the thousand years were ended. That is a calamity—it is a dreadful thing to contemplate, for there shall be a great host of men swept off the face of the earth because of their wickedness. The bodies of these will have to remain in the grave and their spirits in the spirit house to be taught repentance and faith in God while the thousand years of peace are progressing upon the earth.
Satan Bound During the Millennium:
Revelation 20:1
1 ¶ And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
Revelation 20:2
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Revelation 20:3
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
1 Nephi 22:15
For behold, saith the prophet, the time cometh speedily that Satan shall have no more power over the hearts of the children of men; for the day soon cometh that all the proud and they who do wickedly shall be as stubble; and the day cometh that they must be burned.
1 Nephi 22:26
26 And because of the righteousness of his people, Satan has no power; wherefore, he cannot be loosed for the space of many years; for he hath no power over the hearts of the people, for they dwell in righteousness, and the Holy One of Israel reigneth.
2 Nephi 30:18
18 Wherefore, all things which have been revealed unto the children of men shall at that day be revealed; and Satan shall have power over the hearts of the children of men no more, for a long time. And now, my beloved brethren, I make an end of my sayings.
D&C 43:31
31 For Satan shall be bound, and when he is loosed again he shall only reign for a little season, and then cometh the end of the earth.
D&C 84:100
100 The Lord hath redeemed his people;
And Satan is bound and time is no longer.
The Lord hath gathered all things in one.
The Lord hath brought down Zion from above.
The Lord hath brought up Zion from beneath.
D&C 88:110
110 And so on, until the seventh angel shall sound his trump; and he shall stand forth upon the land and upon the sea, and swear in the name of him who sitteth upon the throne, that there shall be time no longer; and Satan shall be bound, that old serpent, who is called the devil, and shall not be loosed for the space of a thousand years.
D&C 101:28
28 And in that day Satan shall not have power to tempt any man.
Burton, ed., We Believe, Millennium
We read that Satan shall be bound a thousand years. How is this to be accomplished? By our becoming so impregnated with the principles of the Gospel—with the Holy Ghost—that the enemy will have no place in us or in our families, and shedding forth that influence in our neighborhoods. . . . Then will he not be bound? Yes, so far as this earth is concerned; and that is the way in which it is to be done, in my humble opinion. He will be chained to all intents and purposes when he can have no influence—no power—no tabernacles into which he can enter; he will then have no place of entertainment. When he finds that he is cornered that close, will he not consider himself bound? I think he will, whether he thinks so or not. (In Tabernacle, March 22, 1857, JD5:43) TLDP:401
The Millennial Messiah, pp. 668-69 TLDP:401
What does it mean to bind Satan? How is he Bound? Our revelation says: "And in that day Satan shall not have power to tempt any man." (D&C 101:28) Does this mean that power is withdrawn from Satan so that he can no longer entice men to do evil? Or does it mean that men no longer succumb to his enticements because their hearts are so set on righteousness that they refuse to forsake that which is good to follow him who is evil? Clearly it means the latter. Satan was not bound in heaven, in the very presence of God, in the sense that he was denied the right and power to preach false doctrine and to invite men to walk away from that God whose children they were: nay, in this sense, he could not have been bound in heaven, for even he must have his agency. How, then, will Satan be bound during the Millennium? It will be by the righteousness of the people. Thus Satan is bound because he "shall have power over the hearts of the children of men no more, for a long time." (2Ne.30:18) Thus the probationary nature of man's second estate is preserved even during the Millennium. It is not that men cannot sin, for the power is in them to do so—they have their agency—but it is that they do not sin because Satan is subject to them, and they are not enticed by his evil whisperings.
George Q. Cannon CR1897 Oct:64
We talk about Satan being bound. Satan will be bound by the power of God; but he will be bound also by the determination of the people of God not to listen to him, not to be governed by him. The Lord will not bind him and take his power from the earth while there are men and women willing to be governed by him. That is contrary to the plan of salvation. To deprive men of their agency is contrary to the purposes of God. Satan only gains power over man through man's exercise of his own agency; and when Satan shall be bound, as the Lord says he will be for a thousand years, one of the great powers that will help bring this to pass will be man's agency. The Lord has never forced men against their will to obey Him. He never will do so. If Satan, therefore, has power with man, it is because man yields to his influence. The time is not far distant when great judgments will be poured out upon the wicked inhabitants of the earth. Every Prophet who has looked forward to our day has seen and predicted that the wicked would be destroyed. Their destruction means the destruction of Satan's power. The righteous will be left, and because of their righteousness the Lord will have mercy upon them; they, exercising their agency in the right direction, will bring down His blessings upon them to such an extent that Satan will be bound.
George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth, Vol. 1, p.89
Now, how will it be on this earth when Christ reigns?…When the Millennium dawns, Satan bound and the elements of the earth at our disposal and under our control, there will be no hunger, no thirst, no nakedness, no vagrants, no houseless people; all will have that which is necessary to supply their physical wants. But there will be no waste. One man will not be allowed to lord it over another and take possession of more than he needs; but all will have a fulness, Satan will be bound. He will not have power to inflict the misery he has done and is doing.
D&C 43:32
32 And he that liveth in righteousness shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and the earth shall pass away so as by fire.
D&C 63:50
50 And he that liveth when the Lord shall come, and hath kept the faith, blessed is he; nevertheless, it is appointed to him to die at the age of man.
D&C 63:51
51 Wherefore, children shall grow up until they become old; old men shall die; but they shall not sleep in the dust, but they shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye.
D&C 101:29
29 And there shall be no sorrow because there is no death.
D&C 101:30
30 In that day an infant shall not die until he is old; and his life shall be as the age of a tree;
D&C 101:31
31 And when he dies he shall not sleep, that is to say in the earth, but shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and shall be caught up, and his rest shall be glorious.
Revelation 21:2
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Satan Is Loosed For a Short Season:
How long is this season. We do not know, but it could be as long as a 1,000 years so that Christ being born during the meridian of time becomes an accurate statement.
Revelations 20:7
"Satan shall be loosed out of his prison."
D&C 29:22
22 And again, verily, verily, I say unto you that when the thousand years are ended, and men again begin to deny their God, then will I spare the earth but for a little season;
D&C 29:23
23 And the end shall come, and the heaven and the earth shall be consumed and pass away, and there shall be a new heaven and a new earth.
D&C 43:31
31 For Satan shall be bound, and when he is loosed again he shall only reign for a little season, and then cometh the end of the earth.
Bruce R. McConkie, The Millennial Messiah, p.695
"And when he [Satan] is loosed again he shall only reign for a little season, and then cometh the end of the earth." This "little season" is presumed to be another thousand years. The reasoning is that Christ came in the meridian of time, which means both the high point in time and the middle of time. The millennial era will be the seventh period of one thousand years of this earth's temporal continuance; thus an added thousand-year period is needed to place the meridian of time in the midpoint in history. But be that as it may, "he that liveth in righteousness" -- at the time of the actual end of the earth -- shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and the earth shall pass away so as by fire." This will be a second day of burning, the day when this earth becomes a celestial globe. "And the wicked shall go away into unquenchable fire, and their end no man knoweth on earth, nor ever shall know, until they come before me in judgment." (D&C 43:31-33.)
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.66
When the thousand years are ended, Satan shall be loosed for a little season and wickedness shall return to the earth. Satan shall gather his forces and in anger attempt a vain effort to wrest the earth from Christ. Michael, the great prince, the archangel, who once graced the earth and was known as Adam, the father of the human family, shall fight the battles of the just and shall overcome. The last resurrection shall take place, and the rest of the dead, who had no place in the millennial reign shall be brought forth to the final judgment. All men shall be judged according to their works.
Doctrines of Salvation, 1:87-88 TLDP:407:08
After the thousand years Satan will be loosed again and will go forth again to deceive the nations. Because men are still mortal, Satan will go out to deceive them. Men will again deny the Lord, but in doing so they will act with their eyes open and because they love darkness rather than light, and so they become sons of perdition. Satan will gather his hosts, both those on the earth and the wicked dead who will eventually also be brought forth in the resurrection. Michael, the Prince, will gather his forces and the last great battle will be fought. Satan will be defeated with his hosts. Then will come the end. Satan and those who follow him will be banished into outer darkness.
George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth, Vol. 1, p.90
[p.90] After the thousand years he will regain some of his present power. It will be as it was among the Nephites…. Men will arise who will object to working for the benefit of others; class distinctions will once more make themselves apparent; Satan will regain his power and will maintain it until the great battle shall take place which is spoken of in the scriptures.
A final battle called Gog and Megog will occur at the conclusion of the short season. Satan’s forces will eventually be defeated.
Revelation 20:7
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
Revelation 20:8
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom [is] as the sand of the sea.
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Section Five 1842–43, p.280
The battle of Gog and Magog will be after the millennium. The remnant of all the nations that fight against Jerusalem were commanded to go up to Jerusalem to worship in the millennium. (March 4, 1843.) DHC 5:298.
Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.74
After the millennium Satan "shall be loosed for a little season, that he may gather together his armies. And Michael, the seventh angel, even the archangel, shall gather together his armies, even the hosts of heaven. And the devil shall gather together his armies; even the hosts of hell, and shall come up to battle against Michael and his armies. And then cometh the battle of the great God; and the devil and his armies shall be cast away into their own place, that they shall not have power over the saints any more at all." (D. & C. 88:111-115.) This final great battle, in which evil spirits, mortal men, and resurrected personages all participate, will be the end of war as far as this earth is concerned. Then the earth shall be celestialized and become the abode of the righteous forever. (D. & C. 88:16-31, 116.)
D&C 43:33
33 And the wicked shall go away into unquenchable fire, and their end no man knoweth on earth, nor ever shall know, until they come before me in judgment.
James E. Talmage, Jesus the Christ, Ch.42, p.791 - p.792
For the great Millennium, of which I have spoken by the mouth of my servants, shall come; For Satan shall be bound, and when he is loosed again, he shall only reign for a little season, and then cometh the end of the earth; And he that liveth in righteousness shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and the earth shall pass away so as by fire; And the wicked shall go away into unquenchable fire, and their end no man knoweth on earth, nor ever shall know, until they come before me in judgment. Hearken ye to these words: Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. Treasure these things up in your hearts, and let the solemnities of eternity rest upon your minds.
D&C 88:100
100 And again, another trump shall sound, which is the third trump; and then come the spirits of men who are to be judged, and are found under condemnation;
D&C 88:101
101 And these are the rest of the dead; and they live not again until the thousand years are ended, neither again, until the end of the earth.
Franklin D. Richards and James A. Little, A Compendium of the Doctrines of the Gospel, p.253
After the spirits who are prepared for redemption shall be brought out of prison by the resurrection, then "Another trump shall sound, which is the third trump; and then cometh the spirits of men who are to be judged, and are found under condemnation. And these are the rest of the dead, and they live not again until the thousand years are ended, neither again, until the end of the earth;" verses 100 and 101. That is, all the dead that remain after the redemption of those prepared, are those who are under condemnation, and they will not come forth through the resurrection until after the Millennium of a thousand years, and not until after the "little season" in which Satan will be loosed; or the end of the earth. It is mournful to think, that, even after so long a period of probation, or trial, there will be then of these spirits those who will still have to remain [p.254] in the prison house, for verse 102 says, "There are found among those who are to remain, until that great and last day, even the end, who shall remain filthy still."
Otten & Caldwell, Sacred Truths of the Doctrine & Covenants, Vol.2, p.34
A Vision of the Telestial Kingdom
The inhabitants of the telestial kingdom were the wicked people of the earth. They rejected the Lord's prophets and participated in such evil doings as lying, immorality, etc. (See D&C 76:98-103) They are not the sons of perdition but will be cleansed as a result of their sufferings in hell while in the spirit world. They will come forth in the last resurrection and inherit the lowest kingdom of glory. They have no claim upon the environments of the Savior or the Father, but will enjoy the ministrations of the Holy Spirit. (See D&C 76:81-86, 106)
D&C 88:102
102 And another trump shall sound, which is the fourth trump, saying: There are found among those who are to remain until that great and last day, even the end, who shall remain filthy still.
Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.640
Finally, in the latter end of the resurrection of damnation, the sons of perdition, those who "remain filthy still" (D. & C. 88:102), shall come forth from their graves. (2 Ne. 9:14-16.) "Then is the time when their torments shall be as a lake of fire and brimstone, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever; and then is the time that they shall be chained down to an everlasting destruction, according to the power and captivity of Satan, he having subjected them according to his will. Then, I say unto you, they shall be as though there had been no redemption made; for they cannot be redeemed according to God's justice; and they cannot die, seeing there is no more corruption." (Alma 12:17-18.)
Collected Discourses, Vol.1, Joseph E. Taylor, June 2nd, 1888
There still remains another class, who seem to have no part either in the first or last resurrection, at least to inherit any degree of glory. When they are brought up it will only be to receive a greater condemnation. These are also the only ones upon whom the second death shall have any power. For a full description of this class I will refer you to the Doc. and Cov., Sec. 76, ver. 31-44, inclusive. In another revelation it is said that "they remain filthy still." Joseph said of them: "Those who commit the unpardonable sin are doomed to Gnolom, to dwell in hell, worlds without end. As they commit scenes of bloodshed in this world, so they shall rise to that resurrection which is as the lake of fire and brimstone. Some shall rise to the everlasting burning of God, for God dwells in everlasting burnings; and some shall rise to the damnation of their own filthiness, which is as exquisite a torment as the lake of fire and brimstone." But we will leave the consideration of the utter hopelessness of these sons of perdition, and turn our attention to a more pleasing subject.
Death and Resurrection of the Earth:
D&C 43:31
31 For Satan shall be bound, and when he is loosed again he shall only reign for a little season, and then cometh the end of the earth.
D&C 43:32
32 And he that liveth in righteousness shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and the earth shall pass away so as by fire.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.3, p.66
Then the end shall come and the earth shall pass away in death, but to be raised in the resurrection by which it shall be made a celestial body and the fit abode of celestial beings who shall dwell in the presence of God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ forever as priests and kings unto the Most High.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., The Way to Perfection, p.349
At the close of this short period, when Lucifer and his followers shall be banished, the earth will die and pass away, being finally consumed by fire. This, however, is not the end of the earth; it shall not be destroyed, even though it shall be dissolved.
"Leaves from the Tree of Life," Contributor, Sept. 1881, pp. 364-65
Thus the inhabitants of Earth with the few exceptions that are beyond the power of redemption will eventually be saved. And the globe on which they passed their probation, having kept the law of its being, will come into remembrance before its Maker. It will die like its products. But it will be quickened again and resurrected in the celestial glory. It has been born of the water, it will also be born of the Spirit. Purified by fire from all the corruptions that once defiled it, developed into its perfections as one of the family of worlds fitted for the Creator's presence, all its latent light awakened into scintillating action, it will move up into its place among the orbs governed by celestial time, and shining "like a sea of glass mingled with fire," every tint and color of the heavenly bow radiating from its surface, the ransomed of the Lord will dwell upon it; the highest beings of the ancient orbs will visit it; the garden of God will again adorn it; the heavenly government will prevail in every part; Jesus will reign as its King; the river of life will flow out from the regal throne; the tree of life, whose leaves were for the healing of the nations, will flourish upon the banks of the heavenly stream, and its golden fruit will be free for the white-robed throng, that they may eat and live forever. This perfected Earth and its saved inhabitants will then be presented to the Eternal Father as the finished work of Christ, and all things will be subject unto the Great Patriarch, Architect, Creator, Ruler, the Almighty, to whom be obedience and reverence and praise in all the countless worlds that shine as jewels in His universal crown."
Our Earth was not the first Earth to be created by Jesus Christ:
Moses 7:30
30 And were it possible that man could number the particles of the earth, yea, millions of earths like this, it would not be a beginning to the number of thy creations; and thy curtains are stretched out still; and yet thou art there, and thy bosom is there; and also thou art just; thou art merciful and kind forever;
Marion G. Romney, Conference Report, April 1961, p.119
I view him as the Creator of this world and of the starry heavens. In this respect it is difficult for us to realize the greatness of Jesus. Enoch was amazed when the Lord showed him his creations. He referred to the number of them in this language: ". . . were it possible that man could number the particles of the earth, yea, millions of earths like this, it would not be a beginning to the number of thy creations; . . ." (Moses 7:30.)
Jesus Christ Will Dwell on Our Earth Forever:
Note:
Our Earth was among the most righteous to be selected as the planet where Christ and his posterity will live. How privileged we will be to co-exist with Jesus and His family for all eternity. Our Earth will no doubt be the most revered planet among all of the Earth’s ever to be created by Jesus for the Fathers spirit children.
Celestial Only to Possess This Earth Throughout Eternity:
Note:
Once we were sent to this Earth from our pre-mortal home, we will never go back and live there, but only to visit, for we will live on this Earth forever more. The notion that every Saint will receive their own planet is false. The doctrine that we will go back to live with Heavenly Father on the planet where He resides and where we used to live as premortal spirit children, is also false. We will continually be in Heavenly Fathers presence but this does not mean that we will live on the planet where Heavenly Father resides. "Blessed are the meek," says the Savior, "for they shall inherit the earth." All Beings who receive Celestial glory will live on our Earth. Remember that there will exist three Celestial Kingdoms on the Earth. Those who achieve the highest degree include all couples and their spiritual posterity through out the eternity’s. Jesus, His wife and all their spirit children, Adam, His wife, and their spirit children, Noah, his wife, and all their spirit children, etc. All couples and their spirit children, (until their spirit children are sent to another planet), will live on this Earth forever.D&C 103:7
And by hearkening to observe all the words which I, the Lord their God, shall speak unto them, they shall never cease to prevail until the kingdoms of the world are subdued under my feet, and the earth is given unto the saints, to possess it forever and ever.
B. H. Roberts, The Mormon Doctrine of Deity, p.282
When I sat and heard that revelation,—it was uttered by the Prophet Joseph, and written by his scribe,—I thought to myself, that is a very curious doctrine, for I had not then learned that this earth was to become our future home and heaven, and I did not think Joseph Smith knew it. But it seemed so curious to me to bring myself to believe that the Lord was going to give us part of this earth, to possess it, and our children after us, while time should last, and to retain it through all eternity, never more to pass away.
Joseph Fielding Smith, The Signs of the Times, p.48
After the thousand years are ended, the earth is going to die. It will die because it is a living mortal thing and then it is going to be raised in the resurrection, by the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, just the same as the resurrection of any human being upon its face. This earth will be restored, and finally it will be a celestialized body. When that time comes, all those people upon the face of the earth who have lived a terrestrial law and been privileged to stay upon the face of the earth, will have to move out. They can not stay here, for when this earth is exalted and becomes a celestial body nobody is going to live on it but celestial beings; [p.49] so if you want to go somewhere else, you can live the terrestrial law or the telestial law, but if you do live a telestial law you have no inheritance here.
The Earth Will Be Taken Back to a Special Place Reserved for it, Close to Heavenly Father’s Planet:
Journal of Discourses, Vol.7, p.162 - p.163, Brigham Young,
June 5, 1859
"And this world so benighted at present, and so lightly esteemed by infidels, as observed by brother Clements when it becomes celestialized, it will be like the sun, and be prepared for the habitation of the Saints, and be brought back into the presence of the Father and the Son. It will not then be an opaque body as it now is, but it will be like the stars of the firmament, full of light and glory: it will be a body of light. John compared it, in its celestialized state, to a sea of glass."
Note:
The Earth will become a great Urim and Thummin to those who dwell on it. Things pertaining to the Terrestrial Kingdom, Telestial Kingdom, and the Sons of Perdition will be made known. After the Earth receives its Celestial Glory and it is prepared to be our eternal home then we will be privileged to receive our eternal inheritances.D&C 130:6
6 The angels do not reside on a planet like this earth;
D&C 130:7
7 But they reside in the presence of God, on a globe like a sea of glass and fire, where all things for their glory are manifest, past, present, and future, and are continually before the Lord.
D&C 130:8
8 The place where God resides is a great Urim and Thummim.
D&C 130:9
9 This earth, in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal and will be a Urim and Thummim to the inhabitants who dwell thereon, whereby all things pertaining to an inferior kingdom, or all kingdoms of a lower order, will be manifest to those who dwell on it; and this earth will be Christ's.
Journal of Discourses, Vol.17, p.118, Brigham Young, June 28, 1874
When shall we receive our inheritances so that we can say they are our own? When the Savior has completed the work, when the faithful Saints have preached the Gospel to the last of the spirits who have lived here and who are designed to come to this earth; when the thousand years of rest shall come and thousands and thousands of Temples shall be built, and the servants and handmaids of the Lord shall have entered therein and officiated for themselves, and for their dead friends back to the days of Adam; when the last of the spirits in prison who will receive the Gospel has received it; when the Savior comes and receives his ready bride, and all who can be are saved in the various kingdoms of God--celestial, terrestrial and telestial, according to their several capacities and opportunities; when sin and iniquity are driven from the earth, and the spirits that now float in this atmosphere are driven into the place prepared for them; and when the earth is sanctified from the effects of the fall, and baptized, cleansed, and purified by fire, and returns to its paradisiacal state, and has become like a sea of glass, a urim and thummim; when all this is done, and the Savior has presented the earth to his Father, and it is placed in the cluster of the celestial kingdom, and the Son and all his faithful brethren and sisters have received the welcome plaudit--"Enter ye into the joy of your Lord," and the Savior is crowned, then and not till then, will the Saints receive their everlasting inheritances. I want you to understand this. We seem to have something now, but how long shall we keep it?
Note:
Yes, Of course. Because Jesus and His family will reside on our Earth, there will no doubt be many visits, councils, and conferences held for other Celestial beings from other planets.
"Leaves from the Tree of Life," Contributor, Sept. 1881, pp. 364-65
".... Purified by fire from all the corruptions that once defiled it, developed into its perfections as one of the family of worlds fitted for the Creator's presence, all its latent light awakened into scintillating action, it will move up into its place among the orbs governed by celestial time, and shining "like a sea of glass mingled with fire," every tint and color of the heavenly bow radiating from its surface, the ransomed of the Lord will dwell upon it; the highest beings of the ancient orbs will visit it,..."
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.1, p.81
We have seen that the Lord had not given to this earth its present time until after the fall. Before that time it was subject to Kolob's time, which is eternal time. After the temporal existence of the earth is finished, it will again go back on celestial time, and there shall be "time no longer." This does not mean that the inhabitants of the earth, who will be celestial beings, will not reckon by time, but by a different time—Kolob's time which the Lord says is his time.
1 Corinthians 2:9
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
Heaven is Divided Into Three Kingdoms: Celestial, Terrestrial, and Telestial:
Discourses of Brigham Young, Pg.382 - Pg.383
We read in the Bible that there is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars. In the book of Doctrine and Covenants, these glories are called telestial, terrestrial and celestial, which is the highest. These are worlds, different departments, or mansions, in our Father's house. Now those men, or those women, who know no more about the power of God, and the influences of the Holy Spirit, than to be led entirely by another person, suspending their own understanding, and pinning their faith upon another's sleeve, will never be capable of entering into the celestial glory, to be crowned as they anticipate; they will never be capable of becoming Gods. They cannot rule themselves, to say nothing of ruling others, but they must be dictated to in every trifle, like a child. They cannot control themselves in the least, but James, Peter, or somebody else must control them. They never can become Gods, nor be crowned as rulers with glory, immortality, and eternal lives. They never can hold scepters of glory, majesty, and power in the celestial kingdom. Who will? Those who are valiant and inspired with the true independence of heaven, who will go forth boldly in the service of their God, leaving others to do as they please, determined to do right, though all mankind besides should take the opposite course. 1:312.
James E. Talmage, Articles of Faith, Ch.22, Pg.409
The Kingdoms with Respect to One Another -- The three kingdoms of widely differing glories are severally organized on a plan of gradation. The Telestial kingdom comprises subdivisions; this also is the case, we are told, with the Celestial; and, by analogy, we conclude that a similar condition prevails in the Terrestrial. Thus the innumerable degrees of merit amongst mankind are provided for in an infinity of graded glories. The Celestial kingdom is supremely honored by the personal ministrations of the Father and the Son. The Terrestrial kingdom will be administered through the higher, without a fulness of glory. The Telestial is governed through the ministrations of the Terrestrial, by "angels who are appointed to minister for them."
Mosiah 2:41
41 And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
D&C 132:21
21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye abide my law ye cannot attain to this glory.
D&C 132:22
22 For strait is the gate, and narrow the way that leadeth unto the exaltation and continuation of the lives, and few there be that find it, because ye receive me not in the world neither do ye know me.
D&C 132:23
23 But if ye receive me in the world, then shall ye know me, and shall receive your exaltation; that where I am ye shall be also.
D&C 132:24
24 This is eternal lives--to know the only wise and true God, and Jesus Christ, whom he hath sent. I am he. Receive ye, therefore, my law.
Moses 1:39
39 For behold, this is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
Zion the New Jerusalem Will Be Like Heaven:
Note:
The Saints that are permitted to live in Zion will live the law of consecration for this will be a test to see if they can live this Celestial Law of Heaven.D&C 105:5
5 And Zion cannot be built up unless it is by the principles of the law of the celestial kingdom; otherwise I cannot receive her unto myself.
Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Vol.9, Ch.13, p.391
What will we be doing in the next world? Farmers and musicians, remembering Adam and the heavenly choirs, need not be overly concerned, but the question really is important, because it is that very life in the eternities for which we are supposed to be rehearsing right now. That is what the Church is for with its law of consecration: to build up the kingdom and establish Zion, "that it may be prepared for the celestial glory" (D&C 88:18). The Lord has told us that there is no other course of action for us, and why should there be? "Zion cannot be built up unless it is by the principles of the law of the celestial kingdom; otherwise I cannot receive her unto myself" (D&C 105:5). "For I give not unto you that ye shall live after the manner of the world" (D&C 95:13). The conditions are emphatic: "If you will that I give unto you a place in the celestial world, you must prepare yourselves by doing the things which I have commanded you and required of you" (D&C 78:7). The saints must learn to do by doing, and however impractical it may seem they must follow instructions--"Neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord" (Isaiah 55:8). "Verily thus saith the Lord, it is expedient that all things be done unto my glory, by you who are joined together in this order" (D&C 78:8). This is a "counsel, and a commandment, concerning . . . [the] united order, . . . an everlasting order"--not for some future time, but to save the church now--"for the benefit of my church, and for the salvation of men until I come" (D&C 104:1). Again, not waiting until he does come. We are assured that it will always work, and the people "should be blessed with a multiplicity of blessings" (D&C 104:2).
Vision of the Celestial Kingdom By Joseph Smith:
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Section Two 1834–37, p.107
The heavens were opened upon us, and I beheld the celestial kingdom of God, and the glory thereof, whether in the body or out I cannot tell. I saw the transcendent beauty of the gate through which the heirs of that kingdom will enter, which was like unto circling flames of fire; also the blazing throne of God, whereon was seated the Father and the Son. I saw the beautiful streets of that kingdom, which had the appearance of being paved with gold. I saw Father Adam and Abraham, and my father and my mother, my brother, Alvin, that has long since slept, and marvelled how it was that he had obtained an inheritance in that kingdom, seeing that he had departed this life before the Lord had set his hand to gather Israel the second time, and had not been baptized for the remission of sins.
Alma 18:30
30 And Ammon said unto him: The heavens is a place where God dwells and all his holy angels.
D&C 129:1
1 There are two kinds of beings in heaven, namely: Angels, who are resurrected personages, having bodies of flesh and bones—
Bruce R. McConkie, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, Vol.1, p.839
I. V. Matt. 28:2. Angels of the Lord] Angels are ministers of Christ. They might be resurrected personages, as was Moroni when he came to Joseph Smith (Jos. Smith 2:30-47); or translated beings, as were Moses and Elijah when they appeared on the Mount of Transfiguration to confer keys of the priesthood upon Peter, James, and John (Matt. 17:1-13); or "the spirits of just men made perfect, they who are not resurrected, but inherit the same glory" (D. & C. 129:3); or spirits from pre-existence, as in the case of the angel who visited Adam in a day when no one had as yet died, been translated, or resurrected. (Moses 5:6-8.)
Hebrews 12:23
23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
D&C 76:69
69 These are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood.
D&C 129:3
3 Secondly: the spirits of just men made perfect, they who are not resurrected, but inherit the same glory.
Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.36
Spirits Of Just Men Made Perfect. -- Part of the "innumerable company of angels" in "the heavenly place" are the "spirits of just men made perfect." (D. & C. 76:66-69; Heb. 12:22-24) These are the spirits of men who have worked out their salvation, but are awaiting the day of the resurrection. (D. & C. 129.)
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Section Six 1843–44, p.325
I assure the Saints that truth, in reference to these matters, can and may be known through the revelations of God in the way of His ordinances, and in answer to prayer. The Hebrew Church "came unto the spirits of just men made perfect, and unto an innumerable company of angels, unto God the Father of all, and to Jesus Christ the Mediator of the new covenant." What did they learn by coming to the spirits of just men made perfect? Is it written? No. What they learned has not been and could not have been written. What object was gained by this communication with the spirit of the just? It was the established order of the kingdom of God: The keys of power and knowledge were with them to communicate to the Saints. Hence the importance of understanding the distinction between the spirits of the just and angels.
Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p.38
I share with you a vision of your eternal possibilities, The celestial kingdom, residence of God, our Eternal Father, is comprised of men and women who have complied with divine law and who were not deceived by the craftiness of men or the doctrines of devils. They are just men made perfect through the mediation and atonement of Jesus Christ (see D&C 76:69). They are obedient to celestial law; for, as the Lord has said, he who is not able to abide the law of a celestial kingdom cannot abide a celestial glory (D&C 88:22). ("A Vision and a Hope for the Youth of Zion," in 1977 Devotional Speeches of the Year [Provo, Utah: BYU, 1978], p. 73.)
Celestial Kingdom is Divided Into Three Heavens:
D&C 131:1
1 In the celestial glory there are three heavens or degrees;
D&C 131:2
2 And in order to obtain the highest, a man must enter into this order of the priesthood [meaning the new and everlasting covenant of marriage];
Revelation 1:6
6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
D&C 59:2
2 For those that live shall inherit the earth, and those that die shall rest from all their labors, and their works shall follow them; and they shall receive a crown in the mansions of my Father, which I have prepared for them.
D&C 76:50
50 And again we bear record--for we saw and heard, and this is the testimony of the gospel of Christ concerning them who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just--
D&C 76:51
51 They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and believed on his name and were baptized after the manner of his burial, being buried in the water in his name, and this according to the commandment which he has given--
D&C 76:52
52 That by keeping the commandments they might be washed and cleansed from all their sins, and receive the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the hands of him who is ordained and sealed unto this power;
D&C 76:53
53 And who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true.
D&C 76:54
54 They are they who are the church of the Firstborn.
D&C 76:55
55 They are they into whose hands the Father has given all things--
D&C 76:56
56 They are they who are priests and kings, who have received of his fulness, and of his glory;
D&C 76:57
57 And are priests of the Most High, after the order of Melchizedek, which was after the order of Enoch, which was after the order of the Only Begotten Son.
D&C 76:58
58 Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God--
D&C 76:59
59 Wherefore, all things are theirs, whether life or death, or things present, or things to come, all are theirs and they are Christ's, and Christ is God's.
D&C 76:60
60 And they shall overcome all things.
D&C 76:61
61 Wherefore, let no man glory in man, but rather let him glory in God, who shall subdue all enemies under his feet.
D&C 76:62
62 These shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ forever and ever.
D&C 76:70
70 These are they whose bodies are celestial, whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God, the highest of all, whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical.
D&C 76:92
92 And thus we saw the glory of the celestial, which excels in all things--where God, even the Father, reigns upon his throne forever and ever;
D&C 76:93
93 Before whose throne all things bow in humble reverence, and give him glory forever and ever.
D&C 76:94
94 They who dwell in his presence are the church of the Firstborn; and they see as they are seen, and know as they are known, having received of his fullness and of his grace;
D&C 76:95
95 And he makes them equal in power, and in might, and in dominion.
D&C 76:96
96 And the glory of the celestial is one, even as the glory of the sun is one.
D&C 88:107
107 And then shall the angels be crowned with the glory of his might, and the saints shall be filled with his glory, and receive their inheritance and be made equal with him.
D&C 130:2
2 And that same sociality which exists among us here will exist among us there, only it will be coupled with eternal glory, which glory we do not now enjoy.
James E. Talmage, Articles of Faith, Ch.4, Pg.91 - Pg.92
The Celestial Glory -- There are some who have striven to obey all the divine commandments, who have accepted the testimony of Christ, obeyed "the laws and ordinances of the Gospel," and received the Holy Spirit; these are they who have overcome evil by godly works and who are therefore entitled to the highest glory; these belong to the Church of the Firstborn, unto whom the Father has given all things; they are made kings and priests of the Most High, after the order of Melchizedek; they possess celestial bodies, "whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God, the highest of all, whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical"; they are admitted to the glorified company, crowned with exaltation in the celestial kingdom.
Those Who Inherit the Other Degrees in the Celestial Kingdom Become Ministering Servants:
D&C 132:16
16 .., which angels are ministering servants, to minister for those who are worthy of a far more, and an exceeding, and an eternal weight of glory.
D&C 132:17
17 For these angels did not abide my law; therefore, they cannot be enlarged, but remain separately and singly, without exaltation, in their saved condition, to all eternity; and from henceforth are not gods, but are angels of God forever and ever.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.2, p.73
NO MARRIAGE IN HEAVEN FOR UNRIGHTEOUS. This is the only answer the Lord could have given to these unbelievers. It is in full accord with the revelation given to the Prophet Joseph Smith, wherein the Lord says that, "when they [those of "this world" who do not keep the whole law] are out of the world they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are appointed angels in heaven; which angels are ministering servants, to minister for those who are worthy of a far more, and an exceeding, and an eternal weight of glory. For these angels did not abide my law; therefore, they cannot be enlarged, but remain separately and singly, without exaltation, in their saved condition, to all eternity; and from henceforth are not gods, but are angels of God forever and ever."
LeGrand Richards, A Marvelous Work and a Wonder, Ch.21, p.303
When the Lord said, referring to the new and everlasting covenant of marriage, "and if ye abide not that covenant, then are ye damned." he did not use the term "damned" in the sense that it is usually understood by the modern Christian world, for it will be noted that he indicated they "shall be appointed angels in heaven; which angels are ministering servants; to minister for those who are worthy of a far more and an exceeding, and an eternal weight of glory." In verse 17 of the above quotation, the Lord stated that they shall "remain separately and singly, without exaltation, in their saved condition." Thus even they will be saved, but not exalted. The use of the word "damned," therefore, means that one's progress is stopped (see D&C 131:4); "they cannot be enlarged" (see D&C 132:17).
Celestial Life in Highest Degree is for Married Couples Only:
D&C 132:18
18 And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife, and make a covenant with her for time and for all eternity, if that covenant is not by me or by my word, which is my law, and is not sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, through him whom I have anointed and appointed unto this power, then it is not valid neither of force when they are out of the world, because they are not joined by me, saith the Lord, neither by my word; when they are out of the world it cannot be received there, because the angels and the gods are appointed there, by whom they cannot pass; they cannot, therefore, inherit my glory; for my house is a house of order, saith the Lord God.
D&C 132:19
19 And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, and it is sealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of promise, by him who is anointed, unto whom I have appointed this power and the keys of this priesthood; and it shall be said unto them--Ye shall come forth in the first resurrection; and if it be after the first resurrection, in the next resurrection; and shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depths--then shall it be written in the Lamb's Book of Life, that he shall commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, and if ye abide in my covenant, and commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world; and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever.
D&C 132:20
20 Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them.
Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p.535
I would like to express the hope which we all have for you, which is so real, that you will be exalted in the highest degree of glory in the celestial kingdom. What does that mean? That means you will enter into the new and everlasting covenant of marriage for time and for all eternity—an absolute requirement to attain to the highest degree of glory in the celestial kingdom. That means you will marry in the Church. That means you will marry in one of the temples of God. (BYU Ten-Stake Fireside, Provo, Utah, 7 May 1972.)
Note:
Revealed Scriptures and modern revelation explain polygamy to be an eternal truth for a selected few during Earth life and some who enter the highest degree in the Celestial Kingdom. Husbands and wives who desire a greater posterity will enter into polygamy. Those who do not wish to enter into polygamy will not have to.Plural Marriages of the Bible:

And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
Note: King David loses his wives:
Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, Vol.4, p.213
David's wives and concubines were given unto him of me, by the hand of Nathan, my servant, and others of the prophets who had the keys of this power; and in none of these things did he sin against me save in the case of Uriah and his wife; and, therefore he hath fallen from his exaltation, and received his portion; and he shall not inherit them out of the world, for I gave them unto another, saith the Lord.3

Some Statements on Plural Marriage:
Note:
The following statements explain that polygamy was given of the Lord to the church in it’s early history, then revoked by the Lord by revelation to President Wilford Woodruff, and finally that the principle of polygamy will again be practiced in the Celestial Kingdom.
Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, Vol. 3, p.161
In the revelation on celestial marriage, that is marriage for eternity, the Lord informed Joseph Smith that these men who had plural families in ancient times did not sin. Moreover, he taught Joseph Smith the doctrine of plural marriage and commanded him to practice it, and this practice was in the Church for many years.
Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, Vol. 3, p.161
In 1890, because of the enactment of laws forbidding this practice and because of the opposition on the part of all other people in the United States and throughout the so-called Christian world, the Lord instructed President Wilford Woodruff to call upon the members of the Church to discontinue the practice of plural marriage. From that time forth the Church has accepted this as a commandment, and plural marriage within the Church has ceased.
Journal of Discourses, Vol.9, p.322 - p.323, Brigham Young, July 6, 1862
Why do we believe in and practise polygamy? Because the Lord introduced it to his servants in a revelation given to Joseph Smith, and the Lord's servants have always practiced it. "And is that religion popular in heaven?" It is the only popular religion there, for this is the religion of Abraham, and, unless we do the works of Abraham, we are not Abraham's seed and heirs according to promise.
Journal of Discourses, Vol.11, p.268 - p.269, Brigham Young, August 19, 1866
Now, we as Christians desire to be saved in the kingdom of God. We desire to attain to the possession of all the blessings there are for the most faithful man or people that ever lived upon the face of the earth, even him who is said to be the father of the faithful, Abraham of old. We wish to obtain all that father Abraham obtained. I wish here to say to the Elders of Israel, and to all the members of this Church and kingdom, that it is in the hearts of many of them to wish that the doctrine of polygamy was not taught and practiced by us. It may be hard for many, and especially for the ladies, yet it is no harder for them than it is for the gentlemen. It is the word of the Lord, and I wish to say to you, and all the world, that if you desire with all your hearts to obtain the blessings which Abraham obtained, you will be polygamists at lest in your faith, or you will come short of enjoying the salvation and the glory which Abraham has obtained. This is as true as that God lives.... The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy. Others attain unto a glory and may even be permitted to come into the presence of the Father and the Son; but they cannot reign as kings in glory, because they had blessings offered unto them, and they refused to accept them.
Spirit Children Offspring only in Highest Degree of Celestial Kingdom:
D&C 132:30
30 Abraham received promises concerning his seed, and of the fruit of his loins--from whose loins ye are, namely, my servant Joseph--which were to continue so long as they were in the world; and as touching Abraham and his seed, out of the world they should continue; both in the world and out of the world should they continue as innumerable as the stars; or, if ye were to count the sand upon the seashore ye could not number them.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.2, p.287
Those who receive the exaltation in the celestial kingdom will have the "continuation of the seeds forever." They will live in the family relationship. In the terrestrial and in the telestial kingdoms there will be no marriage. Those who enter there will remain "separately and singly" forever.
Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.751 SPIRIT CHILDREN
In a future eternity, spirit children will be born to exalted, perfected glorified couples for whom the family unit continues. The very glory of exalted beings is to have "a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever." (D. & C. 132:19-25, 29-32; 131:1-4.)
Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses. Vol. 11 Pg 22
"He (God) created men as we create our children for there is no other process of creation in heaven or on the earth, in the earth or under the earth, or in all the eternities that are, that were, or that ever will be."
James R. Clark, Messages of the First Presidency, Vol.4, p.329
Shall we as Latter-day Saints deny the truth and then claim that God made man in his likeness in the beginning? Shall we come under the impression that God possesses the power of creation, and yet did not literally create? He is not without his companion any more than I am without my companion, the mother of my children.
First Presidency of the Church (Joseph F. Smith, John R. Winder, and Anthon H. Lund)
"All men and women are in the similitude of the universal Father and Mother and are literally the sons and daughters of Deity"; as spirits they were the "offspring of celestial parentage." (Man: His Origin and Destiny, pp. 351, 355.) These spirit beings, the offspring of exalted parents, were men and women, appearing in all respects as mortal persons do, excepting only that their spirit bodies were made of a more pure and refined substance than the elements from which mortal bodies are made. (Ether 3:16; D. & C. 131:7-8.)
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.1, p.33
CHRIST GAINED FULNESS AFTER RESURRECTION. The Savior did not have a fulness at first, but after he received his body and the resurrection all power was given unto him both in heaven and in earth. Although he was a God, even the Son of God, with power and authority to create this earth and other earths, yet there were some things lacking which he did not receive until after his resurrection. In other words he had not received the fulness until he got a resurrected body, and the same is true with those who through faithfulness become sons of God. Our bodies are essential to the fulness and the continuation of the seeds forever.
Nature and Attributes of Spirit Children:
Note:
The physical nature of spirits and spirit children can be explained by reviewing the many appearances of the Pre-Mortal Christ. The scriptures and the teachings of the Living Oracles explain that spirits have a shape in the form of mortals. When Jesus appeared to the Brother of Jared, Jesus allowed him to view His finger then His whole body. It is important to understand that the Brother of Jared was viewing the pre-mortal Christ and not the resurrected Christ. On several occasions the pre-mortal Christ was seen. Remember that Jesus is the God of the Old Testament and that when the Lord God of the Old Testament was seen, it was the pre-mortal Lord that was seen. Scriptures explain that the Lord God Talked, Walked, Ate, Drank, Appeared in the form of a man, etc. We can only conclude from these examples that spirit children will have the same character and attributes as the pre-mortal spirit Christ.Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.750.
Our spirit bodies had their beginning in pre-existence when we were born as the spirit children of God our Father. Through that birth process spirit element was organized into intelligent entities. The bodies so created have all the parts of mortal bodies. The Brother of Jared saw Christ's spirit finger and then his whole spirit body. "I am Jesus Christ," that glorious Personage said. "This body, which ye now behold, is the body of my spirit; ... and even as I appear unto thee to be in the spirit will I appear unto my people in the flesh." (Ether 3:14-17.)
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith p. 181; cf. pp.(297-98).
Inherent in the makeup of their intelligent nature, spirits have agency and are able to make choices. The scriptures teach that spirits are capable of all the emotions, passions, and intellectual experiences exhibited by mortals, including love, anger, hate, envy, knowledge, obedience, rebellion, jealousy, repentance, loyalty, activity, thought, and comprehension.

Having now established the fact that the celestial order is designed not only to give eternal life, but also to establish an eternal order of family government, rounded upon [p.196] the most pure and holy principles of union and affection, we will take a review of the celestial family of man as it will exist in the restoration of all things spoken of by the holy prophets.
First, his most gracious and venerable majesty, King Adam, with his royal consort, Queen Eve, will appear at the head of the whole great family of the redeemed, and will be crowned in their midst, as a king and priest for ever after the order of the Son of God. They will then be arrayed in garments white as snow, and will take their seats on the throne, in the midst of the paradise of God on the earth, to reign for ever and ever; while thousands of thousands stand before him and ten thousand times ten thousand minister unto him. And if you will receive it, this is the order of the Ancient of Days—the kingdom prepared and organized to meet Jesus when He comes.
This venerable patriarch and sovereign will hold lawful jurisdiction over Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, the prophets, apostles and saints of all ages and dispensations, who will all reverence and obey him as their venerable father and lawful sovereign.
They will be organized each over his own department of the government according to their birthright and office, in their families, generations and nations. Each one will obey and be obeyed according to the connection which he sustains as a member of the great celestial family.
Thus the gradation will descend in regular degrees from the throne of the Ancient of Days with his innumerable subjects, down to the least and last saint of the last days, who may be counted worthy of a throne and sceptre, although his kingdom may only consist of a wife and a single child.
Such is the order and organization of the celestial family, and such the nature of the thrones, principalities and powers, which are the reward of diligence.
Law of Consecration Will Be Lived in Heaven:
Teachings of Lorenzo Snow, p.164-165
Consecration is a celestial law. This persecution and expulsion [from Missouri] never would have occurred had the people observed the law which the Lord required. That law was simply the law of consecration—a law of the celestial kingdom. It was a law which, if observed, would have made the people the richest and wealthiest of any people in the world. There would not have been a poor Latter-day Saint in their midst. Every man would have had all he needed to make him happy and comfortable, so far as financial matters were concerned. But the law was rejected and the covenant broken; therefore the consequences came. (12 June 1899, JH, p. 13.)
James E. Talmage, Articles of Faith, Ch.22, Pg.408
That every soul shall find his place in the hereafter, that he shall be judged and assigned according to what he is, is no less truly scriptural than reasonable. He shall inherit according to his capacity to receive, enjoy, and utilize. This is made sublimely plain by revelation given in 1832, in which we read: "For he who is not able to abide the law of a celestial kingdom cannot abide a celestial glory. And he who cannot abide the law of a terrestrial kingdom cannot abide a terrestrial glory. And he who cannot abide the law of a telestial kingdom cannot abide a telestial glory; therefore he is not meet for a kingdom of glory. Therefore he must abide a kingdom which is not a kingdom of glory."
A Man’s Primary Obligation Will Be The Salvation and Eternal Life of His Posterity:
Moses 1:39
39 For behold, this is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
A Women’s Primary Obligation Will Be the Baring and Nurturing of Spirit Children and the Family:
President Spencer W. Kimball - (An 1860 statement by Brigham Young, quoted at fireside address in 1977) DGSM:79
Let me here say a word to console the feelings and hearts of all who belong to this Church. Many of the sisters grieve because they are not blessed with offspring. You will see the time when you will have millions of children around you. If you are faithful to your covenants, you will be mothers of nations. You will become Eves to earths like this, and when you have assisted in peopling one earth, there are millions of others still in the course of creation. And when they have endured a thousand million times longer than this earth, it is only as it were at the beginning of your creation. Be faithful and if you are not blessed with children in this time, you will be hereafter.
Discourses of Brigham Young, Pg.97
Whenever we get into the Kingdom of Heaven, where God and Christ dwell, we shall find something more to do than to "sit and sing ourselves away to everlasting bliss." The mind of man is active, and we must have exercise and amusement for the mind as well as the body. 12:313.
D&C 130:2
2 And that same sociality which exists among us here will exist among us there, only it will be coupled with eternal glory, which glory we do not now enjoy.
Bruce R. McConkie, The Millennial Messiah, p.706 - p.707
Life both here and hereafter is very personal and real. We know what the associations of life are in this sphere and what they will be for the faithful in the realms ahead. Godly and upright living in both realms centers in the family unit. There is no more sweet or tender or loving relationship known on earth than that which should exist between a man and his wife. And they twain should have like feelings for their children and descendants and for their parents and progenitors. With this in mind, we quote the inspired word that says: "And that same sociality which exists among us here will exist among us there, only it will be coupled with eternal glory, which glory we do not now enjoy." (D&C 130:2.)

Revelation 2:17
17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it].
D&C 130:10
10 Then the white stone mentioned in Revelation 2:17, will become a Urim and Thummim to each individual who receives one, whereby things pertaining to a higher order of kingdoms will be made known;
D&C 130:11
11 And a white stone is given to each of those who come into the celestial kingdom, whereon is a new name written, which no man know eth save he that receiveth it. The new name is the key word.
All Will Speak the Same Language:
Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.19
In the beginning God gave Adam a language that was pure, perfect, and undefiled. This Adamic language, now unknown, was far superior to any tongue which is presently extant. For instance, the name of God the Father, in this original language, is Man of Holiness, signifying that he is a Holy Man and not a vague spiritual essence. (Moses 6:57.)
This first language spoken by mortals was either the celestial tongue of the Gods or such adaptation of it as was necessary to meet the limitations of mortality; and Adam and his posterity had power to speak, read, and write it. (Way to Perfection, pp. 60-69.) In writing of the saints in the day of the first man, Moses says: "And a book of remembrance was kept, in the language of Adam, for it was given unto as many as called upon God to write by the spirit of inspiration; And by them their children were taught to read and write, having a language which was pure and undefiled." (Moses 6:5-6.) The beauty and power of this Adamic language is indicated by a statement made by Moroni to the Lord about the Brother of Jared (who spoke the original and pure language): "Thou madest him that the things which he wrote were mighty even as thou art unto the overpowering of man to read them." (Ether 12:24.)
During the millennium, it appears that men will again have power to speak and write the Adamic language. Of that day the Lord says he will "turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent." (Zeph. 3:9.) In some instances when the saints speak in tongues, the language impressed upon them by the power of the Spirit is the pure Adamic tongue.
Note:
To understand more about the nature of Resurrected Glorified Beings, we can look to Christ as the example. When Jesus Christ appeared to the apostles after his resurrection and after his ascension into Heaven, He appeared with a body of flesh and bones. Let us now review these scriptures:Luke 24:36
36 ¶ And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace [be] unto you.
Luke 24:37
37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
Luke 24:38
38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Luke 24:39
39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
Luke 24:40
40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them [his] hands and [his] feet.
Luke 24:41
41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
Luke 24:42
42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.
Luke 24:43
43 And he took [it], and did eat before them.
From these scriptures we learn some important truths about a Glorified Resurrected Body.
Glorified Resurrected Body Has Flesh and Bones But No Blood:
Note: When Jesus appeared to the apostles He explained that He had a body of flesh and bones. Several statements from early Prophets and Apostles explain that blood will be replaced with light.
D&C 88:67
67 And if your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things.
Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.268
Adam, our first parent (1 Ne. 5:11), a "son of God" (Moses 6:22), was first placed on earth as an immortal being. His coming was the crowning event of the creation; and as with him, so with every department of creation -- immortality reigned supreme. (2 Ne. 2:22.) There was no death, no mortality, no corruption, no procreation. Blood did not flow in Adam's veins, for he was not yet mortal, and blood is an element that pertains exclusively to mortality. (Gen. 9:2-6; Lev. 17:10-15; Man: His Origin and Destiny, pp. 362-364; Joseph Fielding Smith, Church History and Modern Revelation, vol. 1, p. 231.) Radical changes were in the offing for man, the earth, and all forms of life when the fall came.
Glorified Resurrected Body Can Suddenly Appear and Disappear:
Note: This is proven by the sudden appearance of Christ when He suddenly appeared to the apostles after His resurrection. Christ suddenly disappeared after a meal with the two seventy on the read to Emmaus.
Luke 24:30
30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed [it], and brake, and gave to them.
Luke 24:31
31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
Glorified Resurrected Bodies Can Travel Great Distances Quickly:
Travel At the Speed of Thought:
Note:
Jesus Traveled to the Father and back before He appeared to the apostles as the resurrected Lord. Brigham Young taught that Celestial Bodies can travel the speed of thought.Travel Into the Past or Into the Future:
Brigham Young also taught this principle.
Glorified Resurrected Body Can Eat:
Note:
We know from Luke 24:42 that Jesus ate food as a resurrected being. From this we can assume that there is a digestive system and internal organs.
Glorified Resurrected Body Can Eat Meat:
Note:
The fact that the risen Lord ate meat does not show that Celestial Beings will eat meat, (only that they can eat meat).Celestial Beings Will Radiate Light:
Daniel 12:3
3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
Matthew 13:43
43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
1 Nephi 1:10
10 And he also saw twelve others following him, and their brightness did exceed that of the stars in the firmament.
D&C 88:67
67 And if your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you; and that body which is filled with light comprehendeth all things.
Discourses of Brigham Young, Pg.98
When you see celestial beings, you will see men and women, but you will see those beings clothed upon with robes of celestial purity. We cannot bear the presence of our Father now; and we are placed at a distance to prove whether we will honor these tabernacles, whether we will be obedient and prepare ourselves to live in the glory of the light, privileges, and blessings of celestial beings. We could not have the glory and the light without first knowing the contrast. Do you comprehend that we could have no exaltation, without first learning by contrast? 4:54.
